MUSIC CHATTER AND MATTER

She's done it again!

AKA An EMCD Is Without Honour In His Own Home, part IIMelissa got home yesterday all of a dither from a trip window-shopping about town. She had happened to be looking around in Best Buy, when she noticed the song on the PA system sounded a lot like Depeche Mode. She still likes Depeche Mode, so she listened along, and decided she liked the song. All she could tell me was two words from the chorus: "True Romance".Gee Dale, have you heard of them?Never mind that I played the debut album for a week straight when it came out. Never mind that She Wants Revenge has made countless mixes since they've entered my life.Gaaaaaaah!I guess I shouldn't complain, at least it's not Soulja Boy.

  1. Anna says ahhahahhaha :P Well, I've realized that you can talk about a band to your real life friends, they don't pay attention, and after a while they come and ask you "hey, have you heard about this cool band called Interpol?". SNORT.

  2. kat3260 says oh if I had a quarter (or even a nickel) for every time this happened... ...I would still be broke. I don't know where I was going with that

  3. msquared64 says this is an epidemic that affects all of us I bet... good stuff.

  4. HelenMarie says Right!!! It does happen too frequently. The majority of our friends have no clue until it's all over the place and _everyone_ has a clue. But then again it's happened to me a few times too, I felt so out of it when our buddies were advising on Modest Mouse when Float On was all over the place. Shame on me. Although...it was before I found MOG, so that doesn't happen anymore...ever. : )

  5. davesonic says Thanks for the post Dale didn't know this was out. It's funny your wife made the Depeche comment, that's who my wife and I saw She Wants Revenge open for when we saw them live.

  7. Dale says Anna, to be honest, I prefer those moments to the normal wrinkled noses and funny looks I get when talking about music to people in person. Even Radiohead elicits a few "huh?" expressions. So sad. No worries kat, pointless rambling allowed today. ;) I guess this is a common occurance. Sigh. Aye, 'tis a good song Tamara.

  8. Dale says Hahahahahahahaha Amber, that's priceless. New band ... *snort*.

  9. amber says HA! Story of my life. I actually had one of my son's friend's moms comment on my t-shirt the other day. It was a Death Cab tee from when I saw them play at Bumbershoot. On the small stage. I think it was after _We Have the Facts and We're Voting Yes_ came out. She said I need to listen to their new song, I'll Follow You Into the Dark because it was such a good song from a brand new band. She thinks they will actually amount to something. I just nodded.

  10. joeybenavides says I'm at the point now where I will tell someone about a band or an album one or twice, and then leave it in the hands of the fates. Someone like Nick Drake, though, is definitely the exception....I'll talk about him until I'm blue in the face....or I have no more friends.

  11. walkingthecow says great story. they are throwbacks.

  12. Marigold says I have had this happen several times as well. It always cracks me up. I always love when people say they are really into music and then you start asking about some really basic well known bands and they have no idea what you are talking about.

  13. goodmusiconly says How it works here is that I'll play something new and I'll get the "What the hell is this? This is terrible!" comment from the man ... and then a couple months later when I play it again it's "hmm, what's this?" and then eventually I might hear the words "wow, this is pretty good!" The task of the EMCD is often a slow and torturous one. ;)

  14. Dale says Joey, that's probably for the best. Let 'em figure it out; it creates more peace of mind. Pat, they're not terribly original, SWR are, but I love the way they take those classic influences and personalize them. "True Romance" is a prime example. Yeah, but you must remember Mike, our view of "basic well known bands" might just be a bit skewed. Not that I'd change it, just saying. You're a lucky woman, E. It has become apparent that Melissa must hear a song without me around to appreciate it. She has developed a prejudice. Sad, but true. Not that I'm quitting, mind. Muwahahahahaha.

  15. SA says I always have that when I ask people to go to concerts. First they are all like "well, I don't know, I don't like the new album that much" or "Well, the band is okay, not sure I want to see them live though." And then after a month or so "Hey Stef, shall we go to this or this concert?". And of course, at that point it is already sold out...

  16. fistula spume says My wife does this all the time. She always asks me if I've heard of something or do I know... It seems to happen sometimes on something I've played in the house over and over again.

  17. Girlcrawl says Those moments are rather charming in their own annoying way; may be a calculated move to place your EMCD king in check - I'm just saying. :-) Great tunes as ever. Cheers.

  18. chucky says So, I'm curious what happened after you told her. Was she suitably shamed? Haha...
    Permalink posted 11/30/2007
  19. ZenPop says FYI: You mis-labeled your Depeche Mode song upload. . . . . . . you can punch me later. . . that's a pretty funny story... I fear it won't be the last time you'll be able to tell it... Cheers!

  20. Dale says Stef, that would really stink, because albums are forever (unless the record company deletes them), but concert tickets are a finite resource. Ouch! Sam, thanks for commiserating! Good point, Cynthia, she does know about the EMCD thing, and would be calculating enough to do that. In this case, I think not. It is charming in the sense that we have a new shared musical love. What do you think, Ash? Not a chance. She just kinda shrugged and said, "Oh. Well, you have SO much music..." Why I oughta, John ...

  22. Mike the Knife says Is it possible that she knew who it was and told you she didn't, because...She Wants Revenge?!?

  23. Dale says Quite likely Mike, heh.
