I subscribe to allmusic's weekly new album release newsletter. It's a wonderful treasure trove of information regarding the latest albums. I love going through the list of entries, clicking through into allmusic to check out those that interest me. I found Emma Pollock that way, as a recent example. So, imagine my surprise when I found that the alt-country band Japancakes has done a "+song-by-song reprise of My Bloody Valentine's _Loveless_+":http://wc05.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=Aj9fpxzqhldse.Now, as MOG's loudest My Bloody Valentine fanboy, you'd understand my natural impulse: reject it out of hand. I went to their "+MySpace+":http://www.myspace.com/japancakesmusic, and, to quote C. Montgomery Burns, "I don't know art, but I know what I hate, and I don't hate this."No, their stirring pedal steel and cello doesn't threaten to rip my head open like My Bloody Valentine does, but it does paint the melody a bit more forcefully. Those that listen casually to Loveless may miss them, but the melodies are really lovely, and Japancakes do a good job of emphasizing them.
