Double word score!

Posted over 4 years ago
I was talking this weekend with a classmate about how much we loved to play Scattergories, when I brought up the distinct advantage we had when the best scattergory ever came up ... band names. That's an automatic 2-3 points in the bank for me, because my RL friends aren't going to guess the band names I know. More likely, they're going to challenge me. A foolish venture, especially if the host has Internet access. So, being bored and kinda geeky, I sat around this weekend to see if I could come up with a musical artist for each letter of the alphabet that would have at the words in the name start with the same letter, and at least two words. Here goes!A: Adam AntB: Bad BrainsC: Cloud CultD: Dead Disco (easy one here)E: Erase ErrataF: Frou Frou (no dice on Fiery Furnaces, good catch August) (REAL easy one here)G: Gus Gus (Gore Gore Girls for triple word score for Pekka)H: Herbie HancockI: Imaginary Icons (thank you Jenny)J: Jesus JonesK: Kling Klang (good one Anna :*)L: Liquid LiquidM: Malcolm Middleton (two easy ones left here)N: Nina Natascia (big ups Ty!)O: Ozzy Osbourne (duh indeed, Peeka; I hang my head in shame)P: Peter Perrett (well spotted Pekka)Q: Quad Queen (need those mp3's post haste, heh)R: Red Rider (Anna to the rescue again!)S: Sigue Sigue Sputnick (I've been waiting for 20 yrs to spring this one)T: Talk Talk (another easy one here)U: Ultra United (Sam got this, and is therefore my hero)V: Viva VoceW: Walter WalterX: Xiu Xiu (heh, got that one!)Y: Yeah Yeah YeahsZ: Zig Zag (rapper, he's in allmusic, that's all I know)Yeesh, what a mess! Help a brother out, won't you?

  1. Augusts1 says I hate to rain on your word game parade but the official name is *The* Fiery Furnaces, so not nearly as easy as you thought. Surprised you didn't think of Franz Ferdinand first! And you of all people, no *Killing Joke* for K?(btw, did you see that bassist Paul Raven passed recently? Look on their website. His memorial service was on halloween).

  3. annieander says Sorry...not a wordy. More of a logic and sudoku person. I can spend hours on "these":http://www.puzzlersparadise.com/onlinelogic/PetSittingWeekend.htm. I should have done better on the s.a.t. with this in my tool belt.

  4. Dale says It is _The_ Fiery Furnaces?!? D'oh! I thought of Franz first, of course, but thought I'd leave it out there. Look where it got me, heh. Killing Joke wouldn't work for the same reason The Fiery Furnaces doesn't work, not all the words start with K. And I did hear about Paul Raven. Terrible loss.

  5. tybees says Ok does it have to be a band or do solo artists count? If so there's Nina Nastasia for N....

  6. Dale says Solo artists totally count, good one Ty!

  12. 1234chainsaw says Too bad it's The Only Ones. But, as it happens, Peter Perrett from that band has released a solo album, so that gives you P. As for Z, I bet there must somewhere sometime have been a band/artist called Zig Zag.
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  13. Dale says Per allmusic, there's a rapper named Zig Zag, so I guess we could go with that, as well as Peter Perrett. Cheers!

  14. jenny says White Whale would work for the W. Do double names -- Man Man, Talk Talk, etc. count?

  15. Anna says A game yayyyyyyy! Do you need only the ones that you're missing? Or you want us to do a new list?

  19. 1234chainsaw says For Q: Hahahah, you can't make this stuff up! Allmusic search delivers Quad Queen, who sport song titles such as "I'm Givin' U Boom", "Sweet Dreams Are Made Of Bass", and "Naughty Girls Need Bass". (Link)

  23. Anna says How hard is it for a band to name itself Underworld Undertakers so that I won't give myself a stroke?
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  24. Dale says My avatar is me hiding my face in shame at missing Ozzy Osbourne. Or LOL'ing at Quad Queen, thinking Anna just may have a new anthem. Yes, Jen, Talk Talk and Man Man, as well as Xiu Xiu and Frou Frou, totally count. Red Rider! D'oh! Or Red Rockers of "Lunatic Fringe" fame! Ack! I knew I was missing some in there! Kling Klang ... Kraftwerk tribute band, methinks? This is proof positive that no one of us is as smart as all of us.
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  25. Anna says Quad Queen must be awesome. I am giving up on the only one left, the U. I can't find anything! Unless my imaginary band, Underworld Undertakers counts.
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  26. Dale says Yeah, how weird is it that we found doubles of Q, X, and Z before U? Will our hours-long nightmare ever end?
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  27. fistula spume says Don't forget about Zero Zero for Z. Here's what I got for U. UFO United, Ugly Ugly Marsmen, Ultra United, Ura Ura, and Usha Uthup. Funny while I was looking on Mr. Bungle's album _Disco Volante_ keyboards, organ, guitar, and electronics are credited to Uncooked Meat Prior To State Vector Collapse.
    Permalink posted 11/13/2007
  28. Dale says Yay! Sam has saved us! Ultra United will be added to the list, and we can all use this post to totally PWN people in Scattergories. Which is, of course, the point of the post. Muwahahaha.

Lizziegreeneyes says Thankfully... you are the furthest thing from scary... actually was talking you & your family up to my Mum this weekend... so worry not, I have doubts none that the eye is securely fastened... I just hope your seatbelt is as well, your chair in its full upright position & that your tray table has been stowed away along with all your carry-ons... heh
