Let the bassists have their day!

Five songs where the bass guitar gets to lead for once:!http://mog.com/pictures/4432/pictures/3634.jpeg?1150930794!Thx to lemontwist for telepathic approval for the picture of George here.1) New Order - The Perfect KissThis song holds a special place in my heart, as it is the song that popped my New Order cherry. I saw the video on MTV, and just stared slack-jawed until it ended. I was amazed by the intense concentration on the song, the coldness and apparent lack of feeling, but most of all, the way Peter Hook absolutely mutilated his bass the whole song through, and especially on the descending bass line at the end.2) Public Image Ltd. - CareeringI just found out a week or so ago that Jah Wobble (THE Jah Wobble), the first bass player for PiL, hadn't ever picked up a bass until John Lydon invited him to join. I'd say he took to it pretty well. I also recently read that the deep bass sound found in this song, and the rest of the songs on Metal Box / Second Edition, was created by using an old bass amp, pointing it a foot from the atudio wall and putting a mike in the space between. That might be part of what Bob Dylan was complaining about when he said that most modern recordings suck, nobody comes up with innovative stuff like that, they just ProTool it or whatever, and it doesn't sound the same, of course.3) Bauhaus - Stgmata MartyrI could cite a dozen songs where David J's bass stole the show for this band, but this has always been my favorite. I know, what's the deal with a Mormon liking this song, or any Bauhaus, for that matter? Dunno, just one of the many contradictions that make me the quirky, charming person I am :)4) The Faint - I DisappearI very much liked their album "Danse Macabre", but when "Wet From Birth" came out, I sure didn't expect this. A massive bass riff right in my face, and even some dubwise rhythm. Still kicks my butt two years later. BTW, you know they have "a MOG profile":http://mog.com/The_Faint, no? Well, go trust them, who wouldn't want to get their updates on the new album?5) Primal Scream - Autobahn 66Let's forget for a moment the obvious Krautrock influence (OK, Bobby, you named your song after the autobahn, heavy Krautrock thing going, got it, no need to spell it out) and enjoy the forward thrust of Mani's bass (an underrated bassist from his days with the Stone Roses). Aaaaaaaaaaaahhh. So, what are your faves, MOGgers?

  1. lemontwist says Hahahaha, no problem, George is more than happy to be in the spotlight. :) I'd reply to this better but I'm too tired right now. Bookmarking it to reply to it tomorrow.

  2. RobP says I saw PIL on their first American tour, and they opened with Careering (I have a bootleg of the show I was at and apparently they technically opened with Fodderstompf, but that was more noodling and tuning, they didn't really play the song) which SHOULD'VE been the first song on Metal Box, was when I taped it, that bass line carries the whole fucking song (albatross was a bit of a plod, an anti-commercialism gesture if ever there was one). For bass lines that carry an entire album, though, other than stuff involving Bootsy I gotta go with Funhouse, which has just one great bass line after another. And now Mike Watt's in the studio with the Stooges. Oh, and with moggers on my mind, the Gang of Four. And Barry Adamson on the first Magazine album, Real Life, really stands out (more than Dave's Gang of Four bass actually, cuz Andy Gill was real good too). But if we're just talking individual songs - sorry, I was in album mode - The Clash, Police & Thieves and Guns of Brixton, two of their best songs, both heavy on Paul Simonon. Looks like I only listened to music in the late 70s/early 80s, cuz my next thought is Talking Heads Psycho Killer. Think I'll grab a beer and give someone else a chance to ramble.

  5. Anna says Oh Dale.Oh do I looove bass. It's my favourite musical instrument (I can't play,I'm deftone, ahaah). But there's nothing that can compare with that bass feeling in your stomach, especially in a live show. It's one of the reasons I love Girls Against Boys so much. They have two bass players (sweet Lord..) & bass is the leader in most of their songs.Kill the Sexplayer is a typical example of that.

  15. soundmagick says Peter Hook is pretty much the first name that comes up when I think of rock bass too. That "Perfect Kiss" video was directed by Jonathan Demme. I remember him talking about deciding to film the video with New Order playing the song live so their expressions would be sincere(which totally makes Hooky's "mutilation" all the more badass). I'm a big fan of Hook's Joy Division basswork also, those melodies are practically primeval to me~ so much so that my little sister(whose elementary school ears were inundated with the lovely strains of Ian C. and Co. for years) ended up getting the friggin' "Unknown Pleasures" cover art tattooed on her flesh. In the past few minutes my Media Monkey has chosen a couple cool bass tunes, " The Burning Spear" by sonic youth (1st song off the first EP) and "Maiden's Milk" by the Meat Puppets off of the "Up On The Sun" LP,not mindblowing feats of bassiousness but I digs. One personal fave riff that comes to mind is "Blowin' Cool" by Swervedriver off of the "Mezcal Head" LP.

  16. Dale says Soundmagick! Dude, haven't seen you on here in ages! I didn't know who directed that video, but after getting Substance and Low-Life, it became readily apparent that it was recorded live. And yes, Hooky is the biggest baddest bassist ever. Even taking Les Clayrool into account.

  17. aedjp says "Primary" by The Cure!
    Permalink posted 09/05/2006
  18. Dale says Ah yes, "Faith" was the album where Robert Smith was as likely to play bass as guitar. "Primary" is a prime example of that.
