WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Raised on MTV, part 1

Posted over 2 years ago
This is the first of a series of music videos upon which I was raised in my youth, in the early days of MTV. I will update this from time to time, as the mood strikes me.The year: 1982, if I recall correctly. My mom had talked a friend into hooking us up with cable TV, so MTV was a new and exciting thing. This video takes me back to when there were so few videos that MTV was really forced to replay them every hour on the hour. No video got more play early on than this one. I didn't mind one bit. From its initial drum fills, into that killer slashing guitar lead, with John Taylor's monstrously funky bass line holding sway, I recognized that this was something _different_, something I could call my own. My mom and her friends weren't listening to this; my mom was still deep in the throes of her unfortunate Urban Cowboy country phase, and her friends had the standard classic rock addictions.I didn't have friends, so I had no idea what music they listened to.The video itself was a revelation as well. It wasn't just a band performance, but it didn't exactly tell a linear tale either. The beautiful ocean scenery appealed to my beach-bum side. And who didn't want to ride on the prow of a yacht, snapping your fingers and singing along, after watching that?Duran Duran became my first band crush. I bought up Rio and Carnival, the mini-album that came with alternate mixes, on vinyl. I found a piece of wood that was roughly shaped like a guitar neck, and would spend many a night alone playing air guitar to those albums. I wish I still had those vinyl albums. However, stamping myself as a fan of theirs came with unexpected drawbacks. I was already a subject of mockery at school; my choice of music only made things worse. It seemed that if you didn't like the Stones or the Clash, you were a total loser. I didn't _dis_like either band, I just liked DD *more*.

  2. Lizziegreeneyes says I watched this video at my grandparents as we weren't cool enough to have MTV in my house back then !!!! Great start Dale - got me salivating for more !!!

  4. Cody B says That was so cool when I clicked over to Brass In Pocket...I'd say that was the one that started me off into videoland..a land I no longer visit, but videoland just the same. Nice one.

  5. Dale says Yeah, gotta love "Brass In Pocket". I didn't include it, firstly because Lucy did such a good job, but also because I didn't really see that video much. I remember that song more from radio.

  7. amber says I have my own videos that examplifiy my MTV era. I'm not going to mention them, just in case they are parts II, III, etc. but I just want to mention MTV was part of what brought my husband and I together. We met in highschool, and at home we didn't have cable, so I hung out at my "friend" Danny's house to watch vids. Fast forward to today, and you'll find one of the strongest romances built on the rock solid foundation of friendship---and MTV.

  9. garrick says Thank you Dale! Finally some credit for Duran Duran! I too fell in love with them via the Rio videos, and the minute I heard Planet Earth, something changed inside me and I became obsessed. I started sneaking into Boston on the bus to buy japanese import remixes, cuz my small suburban town wasn't clued in yet. I endured lots of Jr High torment for my John Taylor hair, but I didn't care. I was a New Romantic, dammit! :) Eventually I met more people like me, and we discovered the Bunnymen and the Cure and Bauhaus together, and by high school we were almost a scene. But it started with Duran Duran. I'll always love them!

  10. amber says At my house, we had little. Across town my best friend had a comfortable life. Intellivison, Showtime, MTV. I moved out of my mother's house when I was almost 17 (I lied about my age and got a rental) and then I had even less. So I practically lived at Danny's house. We spent many evenings in front of the TV, a huge bowl of popcorn drowning in butter between us. My favorite video was: and (what can I say...I had conflicting musical urges) We were there for the much touted debut of Thriller. We argued the benefits of Paul McCartney and The Go Gos. We fell in love. I get irritated when people rant about MTV and it's level of suckage. Not that I don't agree; MTV is not my MTV. But if there had been no MTV, would I be here, now? I hope I didn't scoop your posts but you seemed to tap a nostalgic vein. Thanks.

  11. goodmusiconly says sheez, it was kind of tough not to have a crush on them ... five uber-new-wave model-types playing instruments ... and then they had Patrick Nagel doing the artwork for the cover of _Rio_, an artist that was all the rave at that time .... I was a huge fan of The Clash, but that didn't stop me from liking the wavy yumminess about Duran Duran, which seemed to bridge the gap between punk and pop. "Hungry Like the Wolf" is the one that snagged me on the record initially, but "Save A Prayer" and "The Chauffeur" went down as my favorites.

  13. jenny says When I was in college, I had this summer job babysitting/sleeping over at a ballet camp, girls 8-16, all either already gorgeous or incipient knockouts, and every single one of them had a crush on Simon Le Bon. Ahhh, the 1980s....

  14. contrabandwidth says What a walk down memory lane. This video really didn't look like any other out there. I too was weened on vids like this. This one is the one that really takes me back: I can remember being about 7 and watching MTV in the basement when my parents had company over (we actually weren't allowed to watch MTV! Probably for the same reason we weren't allowed to play D&D), and we would just be in awe of every video that came on. Back in those days I had a radio walkman (which was a BIG deal, being 7 and having an actual Sony Walkman) that my Uncle had given us for Xmas, and I liked just about every song on the radio. I fortunately was too young to get picked on for rocking out to The Pointer Sisters "Neutron Dance" or "Karma Chameleon", so I just loved it all. It's funny because if you look at stuff like DD now, out of the pretext of awful high school hierarchies , it really is just good Pop music. I think that was always the problem, rock people didn't think t was "rock enough", but it really never claimed to be.

  15. Dale says You know Garrick, I wish I had found a similar group of people. As much as I know, there were, but they probably thought I was too square, because I didn't dress the part. Oh well. That is so darn cute, Amber, it really should be its own post. It's wasted in the middle of all this, IMHO. Heh, well spotted E, should have known you'd dig the Nagel cover, not to mention the pretty boys. The album does hold up well even now; if I wasn't listening to some Housemartins, I'd switch to Decade right now. Great, her first recollection is the reunion album ... easy Dale, she's not trying to make you feel old ... she's yr twin, remember? OK, I feel better now. :D

  16. Dale says That was the _only_ thing I had going for me at the time; all the pretty girls liked Duran Duran as well. If I had only bucked up enough courage, I could have had a way to at least talk to girls. That would have been nice. Sounds like fun, Tyler. It's all good, we weren't self-conscious enough to know that we weren't _supposed_ to like a band or genre. ~I liked "Karma Chameleon" too, sssssssssshhhhhh!~

  17. annieander says Here is one of the 1st videos I remember seeing at my friends house. We never had cable, and I had to sneek over for a peek of MTV. Doesn't Glenn Tilbrook look young?

  18. Lizziegreeneyes says I was stricktly a John Taylor girl... I mean come-on... Simon le WHO ???? Front & center is the hottiest hottie of the bunch :) But I got two videos of theres that really make my day - they really took their videos seriously & there's no doubt in my mind that it helped them - that & the modelish good looks as stated by *Erin*...

  19. annieander says BTW...Me and Simon have the same birthdate, October 27 (yep, it's just around the corner..I will be this many...holding up hands with 3 and then an 8...Mr. Lebon will be more than that). He was my favorite guy in the band.

  20. annieander says John was the easy way to go...you had to work to love Simon. But he was not as bad as Nick. You had to pitty the girls that had it bad for Nick. He was a closet case.

  21. Dale says Oh my, I remember that video as well, my first exposure to Squeeze. Yeah, he does look young, as do you (I'm already _that_ many, as of July). Yes Lizzie, your John Taylor obsession is well documented, and rightfully so. I'm 100% hetero, and I gotta admit that he's hott. Yup, two T's. If memory serves, MTV did a lot to "make" Duran Duran, because they figured out that the video could be art in and of itself, and went after it with style to spare.

  22. mister gary at work again says I was seven years old in April of 1985 when I moved from the city of Detroit to the suburbs. I didn't want to leave my friends, but I softened on the idea of the move when my parents started to tell me about this weird thing called 'cable television' that you could get in the suburbs. I think it was a week before I was addicted to MTV. Hearing Motley Crue's "Home Sweet Home" still makes me think about the approximately 2,500 times I watched that video, heh.

He was a closet case." _WHA ??????_ In my neck of the woods - errrvybody loved Le Bon (and he had a certain cuteness factor) & granted, the second fave was but of course John Taylor... but I had a special love for him - the love of an 11 year old is a very special love indeed ;) Simon seemed to love himself enough that he didn't need any help from me ;P Even *Dale* has my back on this one...

  26. annieander says No way Lizzie, in my neck of the woods, it was second place Simon. Tooootally! It was John Taylor this, and John Taylor that. I was such a Duran Durannie! Get it. GET IT! Durannie! HAHAHA!!!!! Yea, not that funny. But probably not the point of the original post, right Dale. See how we are putting you in the middle of our catfight.
