Re-Discovered: Gene Loves Jezebel

Posted over 2 years ago
This spills over from yesterday's New Wave Wednesday, as well as dondeluxe's post about Love and Rockets.OK, I admit it, I loved this band in high school, wearing out my cassette of Discover. However, Gene Loves Jezebel's take on goth hasn't exactly aged well. On the contrary, it's aged worse than the bananas on my counter.Need proof? This is the video for their single "Suspicion" from their album The House Of Dolls. One word: EGAD!Their older material, while still cheezy in that lovable 80's way, still holds up well. I'd show you more, but the MP3 uploader isn't playing nice. Sorry.

  1. Dale says Well, at least you get the 30-second clip above. No, it's not cutting it for me either. _sigh_

  2. Misstee says I forgot about these boys....thanks for the reminder.

  3. Dale says Apparently a watched MP3 never uploads. I went off to do other things, and the doggone thing uploaded. Now THIS is good stuff, IMHO:

  4. Girlcrawl says Their first three albums were 'lovable' indeed. Here's a rather embarrassing admission (just between you and I): I had a rather mad 'crush' on vocalist twin Michael - thought he was the most adorably sexy thing walking about in the early eighties. Great post; lovely reminder!

  5. Mike the Knife says Awright! Wales is in the house! Yes, it's a bit dated, but I always enjoyed their neo-glam/new romantic guitar-rock thing, and don't find their sound aging worse than some of their peers. (I know. Faint praise. Still, I find much of their stuff remains listenable.) And does that "dude-looks-like-a-lady" vibe ever go out of fashion in rock and roll? Afraid not. ;-)

  6. Dale says Indeed; where would rock n roll be without those willing to play with genders (Jagger, Bowie, Smith)?

  7. garrick says Thanks for the flashback Dale - I knew all the guitar parts on Desire once, and I bought tix to a show back in the late 80's even though I was too young to actually attend. Wheatflour! Have you seen the cow?

  8. Dale says the internet has let me down, i cannot find the lyrics to "cow". i don't know what he says there. i hope it's not "wheat flour!". heh

  9. garrick says yeah - me too :)

  10. goodmusiconly says hah, oddly enough, this song pops into my head on a continual basis, because I have a friend who tends to cough the same way that the boys sing the part "shu shu!" (right before "what you get is what you seek...") ... I cannot help but sing the following line every time. But I am warped that way ;)

  11. GooGoomuc says Funny I just bought a special edition of "Promise" CD. I thinks its their best, more of the goth label they got early on. The disc is a double CD with B-sides and extended versions. plus the EP "Shaving my neck"

  12. Dale says erin, how did you find that video?!? i had been looking for a day now. man, i loved that song most of all. but you can see from the video, it appears they've been hanging around sunset strip in l.a. too long, so they've got a lot of hair-metal mixed in with the goth. it really was the beginning of the end. the house of dolls was just a complete travesty (although i didn't know it at the time, still liked suspicion). good purchase there, googoomuc. i think i have the original version of promise somewhere, and you're right, it's much rougher. "shaving my neck" particularly so.

  13. I am says I am sorry you were such a confused youth D. Hopefully your all better now.

  14. Dale says Ah, the folly of youth, Chris; to be taken in by a hair-metal band posing as goth-lite. Heh

  15. extraordinarypoems says That is just so ... disappointing. I hear better stuff than this at karaoke every weekend. :>)
