I don't remember who turned me on to The Waterboys. It was back when I lived in Nashville, probably in one of the clubs there. Before I moved there from New Orleans I was under the mistaken impression that it would be virtually all country music; I was very much mistaken. It wasn't as vibrant a musical mecca as New Orleans, but it was actually pretty darn close. One of the many pleasures there was a healthy dose of blue grass. I remember a blue grass festival I went to while there that had an excellent group from Japan. I wish I could remember their name now.
The big problem - where to buy liquor on a Sunday? And, no drive-thru daiquiri stores. Fortunately Popeyes chicken preceeded me there. While I was listening to Van Morrison's tune Sweet Thing the other day it made me think of The Waterboys' cover. This then made me think of one of my favorite Waterboys tunes, And a Bang on the Ear, a bitter sweet song about past loves. A bang is a kiss for those who don't know.
So here's the song that started me down this path along with it's Waterboys cover. I prefer The Waterboys' version.

First off, the music in all the players sounds great, quality wise. Details?
Love the ear tune and the WB's cover, although the main sticking point with me and that band is the vocals. To some extent I have that with Van too, though a lifetime of hearing him has softened me a bit there.
I enjoy the arrangements and the WB's definitely add somethng to the cover version.
When I first started ripping CDs I didn't realize that the Windows Media Player would rip, by default, to WMA files. Then I realized that when itunes imported WMA files it copied them to AAC files. It drives me crazy when industry behemoths don't used standard formats. Now I was using twice as much disk space than I expected. Back then the Windows Media Player didn't offer MP3 as an option, so I started using other players. Now I generally stick with the current version from Microsoft, but adjust to rip MP3s with the highest bit rate allowed (320 Kbps). I haven't messed with other players recently. Perhaps there are some that offer higher bit rates. Know of any?
At first I thought I had so much I went with mp4/itunes..but since about 2 years ago I'm 320 mp3 for everything..For MOG or other reasons I go back and upgrade my mp4's to mp3 periodicaly.
Thanks so much for clearing that up for me. I've alwayhs been puzzled by that bang on the ear thing. This album has been a big fave of mine since 1988. They reached a peak with this one. It's about as Irish and as Free as you get at one time. I especially like the title song and We Will Not Be Lovers. Oh, maybe World Parry, too. They went through a number of changes through some good stuff, but different. Also, there's a reorganized Waterboys, too.
love both versions... a long time fan of Van and Waterboys. I do convert all my songs to MP3/320. I used to only do MP3/160 but it didn't seem good enough.
have always liked the WB's and to a lesser extent, some of Mike Scott's solo stuff though he has a tendency to wax religious from time to time. Room to Roam was a fun lp as well.
Always good to revisit
Thanks!
To make the post more complete now that Spike 1 has brought it up --
Alert, I had to remove the apostrophe in order for Fisherman's Blues to embed properly.
Thanks. I was about to add the songs in my comment, but deferred.
I was somewhat shaken that Room to Roam (1990) was not more like FB at first. Now, I listen to it and enjoy it on its own terms. Good call, Rummy. I also went back and listened to a few cuts on This Is the Sea and liking that. It's more the contemporary, jazzy, rock (U2), "Big Music" sound.
Oh, yeah. my question is where did you get that nifty player.

I prefer it over Little MP3 since it shows the title, but it does take a bit longer to upload.
