Youssou is one Africa's best and best known singers. Here's a link to his Wikipedia article.
His style of music is called mbalax. He runs a great band called the "Super Etoile de Dakar" (Super Star of Dakar). He sings his songs in Wolof, French, and very occasionally in English.
Youssou N'dour is the last musician to have achieved the cross-over of African music to the West. (The others are Myriam Makeba in the 60sn Manu Dibango a decade later, and Mory Kanté in the 80s)
