Back in '98, VH1 did their first "Divas" concert that had Mariah Carey, Celine Dion, Gloria Estefan, Shania Twain and Aretha. For the encore, they brought out Carol King, and performed "A Natural Woman," and all I can remember thinking was, man, there ain't but one diva on that stage.
Q grooving to an Otis Redding's song. Actually, it's more than a song it's a signature. Aretha makes it so completely her own.
Re VH1 "Divas," I think Aretha didn't sing in her natural register and the power of voice had somewhat waned. Still even with "half" of a voice, she can outshine any "so-called" diva any time.
Yeah, you're right. She's singing it in a cooler fashion than she would have earlier in her career. It looks like the performance was at some kind of black tie gala.
She seems to be relaxed and having a good time, which I was tickled to see.
