Sonny Rollins frequently played cadenzas to end tunes. Here his opening cadenza visits "The Daring Young Man on the Flying Trapeze", a calypso melody, and "I Can't Get Started" on the way to starting Miles Davis's "Four".
His idea flow is never ending, his sound is ever-varying and he plays with great good humor.
This rhythm section, pianist Kenny Drew, Niels Henning Oersted Pederson (NHOP for short) and drummer Tootie Heath was one of the best playing in Europe from the late 60's through the late 70's.

Impeccably fluid. For me, Sonny's music's always been marked by his generous and as you said humorous flair. The rhythm section on this capture is definitely tight.
I was listening to "Adam's Apple" the other day and was arrested the incredible rhythm impulsed by Joe Chambers and Reggie Workman on "El Gaucho." I had to repeat the track over and over just to try and detect whether they ever caught each other unaware in their duel of sorts.
This is fantastic. Goes great with my pineapple and vanilla wafer snack at mid-afternoon. :>)
