One of the few video captures of the John Coltrane Quartet in live performance. They are playing outside in August, but it was chilly night.
Drummer Elvin Jones and bassist Jimmy Garrison have been putting so much energy into their performance that clouds of water vapor are billowing above their heads.
Very energetic and emotional playing. They start the tune with a loose, floating tempo while Trane plays the melody. The instant Trane stops and McCoy Tyner starts to solo, they pop into gear and steadily build the excitement.
They're tumbling rocks off the mountain by time Coltrane starts his solo. The intensity is immense by time Coltrane is in mid-flight.

A breathtaking video and post - You've got such a way of pointing out the construction of Coltrane's theme which captivates the reader and makes them to watch the clip with eager expectation (more than rewarded when you get to see such fine musicians dedicated to the music in hand, as it were). Doing all that, you don't debunk the pleasure or even the intricate tonal changes which make "Naima" such a great track.
Simply brilliant - must dig up my "Afro Blue Impressions" for a long over due re-listen.
Happy Yule to you and best of wishes for 2008 ;)
