WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

David Grisman - Neon Tetra

Posted about 1 year ago
David Grisman started out playing bluegrass music, a pretty conservative musical form, but was very attracted to doing jazz style improvisations using bluegrass instrumentation. After he started performing that way with his bands, I'd heard that old timers would ask him "you still doing that dawg music?". That provided Grisman with the moniker which he uses playfully in many of his album and tune titles. I love the intricacy of this song, and how the melody comes to a stop and then changes direction, without the band ever losing the wonderful groove they found. Do you figure they're imitating the motions and color swirls of tropical fish in a tank?

  1. Pat Autilio says Thanks for the listen. I've been a Grisman fan from way back. My favorite album is probably Mondo Mando. Nowadays, I'm also listening to a lot of Tony Trischka. In many ways, he's cut from the same cloth. Pat

  3. Pat Autilio says I posted a tune from Dawgnation, his 2002 album, on my page. I like this album a lot. Remarkably, this album made my 15-year-old daughter a fan as well. Cheers.
