Miles Davis piece "Spanish Key" from his "Bitches Brew" album was the first jazz performance I heard that I loved so much that I tried to memorize every phrase in it. This video shows Miles's trumpet solo from a live performance in Antibes four weeks before "Bitches Brew" was recorded. Miles solo is worthy of memorization but the band is playing much faster than on the sudio recording. Chick Corea is already feeding Miles electric piano comping ideas that will be important in the studio recording. Miles was a master of using space in his solos. Miles trained in the ring with professional boxers. He seems to have transfered what he learned there to be able to pick exquisite moments and the right actions to answer what his band throws his way. He answers with powerful moves.

indiepixie says love it. great way to walk up. Miles Davis always perks my ears. so much distinct energy...this has an undertone of mystery....a bit 'pink panther-esque' no?

BillK says Excellent post. Mile Davis and "Kinda Blue" were my introduction to jazz. I was hooked from the first time I played it. My only regret was that I didn't start listening to jazz until I reached middle age. But, then again, maybe I wasn't ready. Bill

Bartleby says I find Miles' music mesmerising - his solos are as you said inhabiting you. Antibes is very lovely picturesque town in the South of France and still hosts an excellent jazz festival. (Pity it is now so ridiculously expensive)
