Oscar D'Leon - Yo Quisera

    Yo Quisera
I helped found a community run non-commercial radio station, KZUM, in the late 70's. My friend Carlos Siso always played Oscar D'Leon's music on his Sunday afternoon program there.Carlos was Venezuelan and couldn't get a radio license from the FCC so I was his engineer.Oscar's salsa band was killin' then like the band that plays for this video, and Oscar always sounded this good when he sang. I'm very happy to find that he's retained his vitality as he's aged. That seems to be the conceit of this video. Oscar's the bald gentleman with moustache doing all of the exercises in the video while he sings. There's lot to love in this music: the salsa rhythm players, the interplay between the screaming trumpets and the trombones, the pianist's driving rhythm, the way the band sings a refrain over and over in the middle and Oscar improvises a response for every rep.

  1. Bartleby says Salsa has somehow lost its savour for me over the years - perhaps over-exposure, perhaps the ersatz which is blasted over the shopping centres PA system killed it for me. Pity really because I still enjoy some "el son cubano" from time to time.
Incidentally, are you familiar with the documentary called "Calypso at Dirty Jim's" where you find out how calypso was more subversive than people would think? When you watch/read the story behind "Rum & Coca-Cola" (a song about mother and daugthers have to prostitute themselves during the US "occupation" of Trinidad), you hear another accent in The Andrews Sister's hit.

  3. DLuebbert says Bartleby, I like the vid you posted. Who are those folks? I haven't followed salsa closely since my radio days so I'm in a time warp with it. I still wonder what the best music by Oscar, Willie Colon, Rueben Blades, and Celia Cruz has been since I lost track of what was going on. Carlos was a wonderful guide for me but then I lost track of him after he graduated. Perhaps there's a salsa loving mogger or mogger-to-be who will guide us to find the good stuff. There's also so much we don't know about the roots music of the Carribean and Latin countries. The folkloric sources south of the US are incredibly valuable and need to be better known. The song pluggers who push their tunes for public consumption don't care much what's going to last. They can make any genre seem moribund and stupid. Save us from the music companies and preserve the musicians and their music, Lord! I haven't seen that documentary. I'll find it and have a listen. Thanks for the recommendation!

  5. Bartleby says It's Adalberto Alvarez and his band. I heard him on a compilation of "'Son Cubano" I picked up in France - I lost the CD but the name stuck (and YT is great for reviving your memory)
