MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Artist:
Track: Psychologically Overcast - (with Busta Rhymes)
(58)

...I spoke on this band the other day and it reminded me of a post I'd thought of a while back but never punched up, so, I'll remedy that right now with a little funk rock action...check this Fishbone LP that dropped right around the time I'd moved from Atlanta to LA...the Bone, however, were going in the other direction as the went to Atlanta to work with the producer Dallas Austin on their LP Chim Chim's Badass Revenge and is one of their best, latter day albums that came a day late and a dollar short (in the years following their Lollapalooza-era heyday, it seemed like these guys couldn't get arrested...a lot of the stuff on this LP are revisions of earlier jams I'd heard before like "Alcoholic" and "Beer Gut" but there were some fresh jams on it too, so if you see it, pick it up and check "In the Cube" and "Love...Hate" (both ska joints), "Riot" which encapsulates the mindset of the LA Riots that was still fresh on the minds of Angelenos when I got here and the closer "Nutmeg" which I thought was their coldest cut in a while when I first heard it (still one of my top 10 Fishbone originals)...on "Psychologically Overcast", the group goes in a newer direction by collaborating with the pre "Hands Where My Eyes Can See" rapper Busta Rhymes who swings a pretty deck cipher on the tune's last verse...yo...yo-yo, diggy, diggy, yo-yo-yo...

...Am I Black enough for ya?...the message in this tune "Rock Star" pretty much sums up all the BS that this and other black rock bands go through while trying to make their way on "the Pigeonhole Floors" of the music biz...it's another highlight from the Chim Chim set...

This sounds like the Isley Brothers on amphetamines. That's a compliment.

Gotta say that Angelo Moore is one of the most riveting live performers I've ever seen and the band has always been tuffer and tighter than most. These guys don't get near enough credit, C.P. Happy to see that you continue to spread the good news.

@ivy: no doubt...they've got a lot of great stuff that a lot of people don't check...

@Mikey: I can't help myself...the way that this band gets overlooked is criminal...but you've read my tales already probably...Fishbone, Love, Stereolab...Rahsaan Roland Kirk...Kraftwerk...get major dap in my camp...but you've guessed that too, I'd assume...

Love Fishbone - great post CrashPryor. The melange of styles/influences these guys wield is astonishing, and what sounds emerge when they work their magic! Thanks for posting.

I love this album. In The Cube is among my favorite Fishbone tracks and, in my head, was the theme song of my whole residency experience...

It's liberating for a little while

But living in shit and shit And being about shit ain't my style

Also, Rock Star is immediately what I thought of when CodyB mentioned that the label only wanted to distribute 3000 copies of the new CD.
