MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Album: Mezzanine, Yellow Magic Orchestra
Track: Firecracker

...I just got back in from that Massive Attack show at the Bowl and I started wondering where all the love for "stuff electric" came from in the first place and it became clear that one of said place is Japan, more specifically Ryuichi Sakamoto and the Yellow Magic Orchestra...long before ringtone beats were popular, there where mugs that put motherboards together and patched wiring by hand and Sakamoto's one of 'em...I remember, from my youth, checking some nieghborhood kids break dancing to one of those cuts from the Yellow Magic LP (pictured above) called "Firecracker" peep the video (hold tight through the GameBoy effects, the big beats are comin', yo)...wait for the groove because it's a chunky one...Sak's body of work augmented what Kraftwerk were hooking up over in Germany around the same time...one can see why Africa Bambaataa scooped a loop from them for "Planet Rock"...enjoy this cut and laters on the show...

Jess, despite the fact that TVOTR got the hook-mid encore they sounded hot and Massive Attack was all that and a bag of Funyons' the Bowl's acoustics are just phenomenal no matter where you sit -- MA kicked live all the way from Jump Street...through "Rising Son" in which Horace Andy rocked the spot with their rendition of "Man Next Door"...the lady singing "Teardrop" was cherubic and then the Sucker M.C.s-ish feel they dove into "Anti-Star" with set it all off...so tight, in fact, I phoned a friend so they could check that build up on "Angel"...I realized that Massive Attack is one of those bands you go to feel, not necessarily to see/hear (if you're driftin' me) and that digital equalizer display expedited that fact throughout it all...I went on a whim and am glad I did so... -c
