...This Is England: See This Film (Review)...

Posted over 2 years ago
...Today I saw England, well kind of, I covered a screener for Shane Meadows' new film about his skinhead past as a youth and was rendered speechless for a couple of hours...which worked good because I wanted to keep the coals of thought warm while I punched up a review but this is a music blog so I'll get with the tunage here...they were only giving out the soundtrack to this one in the UK but I had everything myself, anyway...these are some of the tracks from the film...ska classics....this one opens the film......press play whilst checking "*the film review on The Chronicles of Ridicule...*":http://chronicridicule.blogspot.com/2007/07/this-is-england-watch-and-learn-film.html

  4. Mike the Knife says Actually "54-46 Was My Number" is used in the film (during the opening credits, if I'm not mistaken). So you were right, even tho' you were wrong, C.P. ;-) Saw it yesterday, and was blown away by so much of it. There's a sickening inevitability to a couple moments, but it was powerful, disturbing stuff from top to bottom. And there is a pop music component that is significant to the subject and the evocation of an era and social movement, so this was a very MOG-worthy nod. (Not to forget: Man, do I dig Toots Hibbert!)

  5. CrashPryor says ...right on, Mikey...ah, I was so stoked on getting it out there I mixed up my scripts...oh well it's all buttery, thanks for pointing that one out...yanno, the feeling...so rare when a movie comes together on all those levels...a lot of kids don't know about the Jamaico-British roots of what that scene's about...I thought it was tres cool of him to show it...that is was, gets lost in the sauce of rhetoric...I hope it gets seen here...

  7. FluxCapacitor says My, Toots is just everywhere on Mog at the mo'. Huge fan of Meadows' 24/7, and have been meaning to see This Is England. Your enthusiasm has made my mind up. If it's out on DVD over here, and I think it is, I'm going to rent it this w/e. I'll read the rest of your review afterwards so's not to prejudge anything. Thanks for the heads up.

  8. contrabandwidth says There was a great review on NPR the other day, and I really want to see it. Sounds pretty raw. Hope it plays at the 1 indy art house theatre here.

  9. CrashPryor says @girlcrawl: not a problem, I'm just surprised it took so long for this film to get over here @RuxCapacitor: I know, roight? I've been listening to him for years (got to see him a lot live while opening for him back in the day...I saw that it was already out over there...I hadn't even heard of it until one of my Multiply groups pulled my coat on it....there's so much crap coming out...you know the whole song and dance, so I won't go there...check the DVD if you get the chance, though... @contraband: I missed that too....been listening to a lot more progessive radio (sometimes NPR can be a trifle stodgy)...although their weekend lineup's pretty rockin'-- PHC, Car Talk, On the Media, Zocalo, Play's the Thing, etc...I don't know where you are but as printed at the footer of review, I think after the LA New York releases, there should be a wider rollout everywhere (or at least in art houses)...

  10. Jonh Ingham says Cool film. Skankin' music. Fabulous man. (Toots that is - tho yr rockin' hard for the crown, Chris.)

  11. CrashPryor says @Ingham: word...that sound can't be copied and never gets old...

  12. FluxCapacitor says Saw this at w/e. *Spoilers* Loved the characters, situation, acting and performances. Actually about something yet incredibly suspenseful. Some nail-biting scenes. Particularly the conversion of Shaun. The bust-up after the National Front rally. And especially when Milk "smiles" at Combo. It seemed sickeningly true. I had some minor problems with the plot. Like I was perplexed that Meadows basically sidelined Woody half-way through. And I didn't like that Combo's freak-out at the end was put down to "going psycho". Much more powerful if he did it because he was genuinely in thrall to an evil philosophy. Also, wasn't Smell a little old for our hero?! Still, fair play to him for pulling her...! All in all a wonderful picture, though. Btw, thanks for information on the actors. They were all incredible. (Have posted this on your site, too.)

  13. CrashPryor says @Col: I hear you, man...I think a lot of shortcuts might've been taken; character arcs abbreviated for brevity's sake (as tends to happen with films)...I think putting Woody on the outs contributed to that feeling of overall ominousness when we wonder what in the fuck is Combo up to, yanno the scene in the car with Lol, after he figures out where Woody is...a great device, I think-- had me wondering about what he was going to do...and then "the revelation" of the scenario that he'd held on to for all that time, when he's told what it really was...which leads to the "berzerker" stuff in the apartment...I see your point, too though...I'd like to check it again...

  14. FluxCapacitor says Yeah, the car scene was brilliant. One of about a dozen incredibly tense scenes. Lol was such a hero in that film. And her and Woody's their methods of denying Combo in company were so tactful. The exchanged glances when Combo said something disgusting. Walking straight out of a party when he arrived. I actually want to see this again, myself... Re the music, other than Toots, I loved the Smiths' cover...will have to track down the soundtrack.
