...I was chillaxin' earlier today and out of the blue, I decided to go and check out a film...as it turns out the only thing that was coming up in the next half hour in the theater down the street was Evan Almighty....I've seen Bruce Almighty with Jim Carrey and Morgan Freeman already...I had a couple of laughs back when I saw it...so I figured, what the fuck...As the story maintains, Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), the foil/ news anchor from the first film, makes the jump from the news chair to a seat in Congress which precipitates in a move from Buffalo, NY to Northern Virginia with his family in tow...Once he gets to said City on the Hill, he gets a message from God (Morgan Freeman reprises his role as the Man upstairs) and is instructed to build an ark before an impending, planet-cleansing flood washes over everything (even a date is given)...initially the eye-rolling, clean-shaven germophobe ignores the call from above but eventually gets the zap on his dome and acquiesces, politics, family and C-Span be dammed...laughs are right around the bend on the road to Damascus...or are they? 1. Mike the Knife says Man, that was such a waste of talent and my time - and I get paid to see these things. For all the good will engendered by Mr. Carell on "The Office" and in supporting film roles, I wonder how long before sequel-itis, remakes of old properties (the upcoming "Get Smart" film), and other examples of Hollywood's paucity of invention will undermine his career or render him an unwelcome presence.

  2. chucky says I do not want to hear this. I haven't actually heard anything good about this but with my Office guy and my Gilmore Girls chick I can't believe it could be as bad as everyone thinks it is.

  3. Mike the Knife says Ah, but it is, chucky. At least, to a discerning comedy lover such as yours truly. ;-)

  4. contrabandwidth says I'm sick of crap like this. The first wasn't even that funny, once you got over the gimmick, it was kind of boring. I love Steve Carrell, but Tom Shadyac makes some of the most insulting (intelligence wise) comedies. I am a comedy snob (admitedly) but hardly anyone takes a chance anymore with comedy, so you get movies like "Wild Hogs", duck dick jokes, or the claw your eyes out "What black man does that" type humor in the style of Jackie Chan/Chris Tucker. This stuff would be mildly entertaining on television (for free) but is a waste of money on the big screen. No one wants to take a chance anymore (except for Judd Apatow, but even his was hard earned with a series of brilliant programs that just didn't have the viewers.) with comedy in the movies. It makes me sad, since Carrel is really a smart comedian, and this looks just like a pay day to me.

  6. CrashPryor says @Mikey: sehr gut, Herr Schneider...it really stank...I didn't get paid for this review but you know me...I try to spare the pain...like Enid said in Ghost Word: "after seeing this one, you'll need ten beers"... @charles: I hate to break it to you, but I'll be gentle...wait for the rental...as I said, I don't know what in the hell Lauren was thinking...Carrell is just coasting on the 40-Year Old Virgin momentum (can you blame him? Get in where you fit in)...I'm just saying it was terrible...Worse than Wicker Park...and that's saying something... @contra: me too, yo...It's hard not to become jaded in this town...but I remain vigilant, as every once in a while there are surprises, like, say "*Tristram Shandy*":http://mog.com/CrashPryor/blog_post/27278 ...but the surprises are becoming rarer and rarer... @Pose: and, like, how did they get all of those animals to like walk in two-sies? Magical!!!
