Music: It's Good for What Ails Ya!!!

Posted over 2 years ago
...you might not know the guys in the picture above by face but if you're on here, then you've certainly heard their music. They're the producers Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff who produced a grip of great soul albums from the 60s on into the 70s...the list is long but to name a few, they've sat behind the boards for groups like The Soul Survivors ("Expressway to Your Heart"), The Jacksons ("Show You the Way to Go"), Bunny Sigler ("Love Train") and Dusty Springfield ("Silly, Silly Fool")...yeah son, their body of work as a unit is quite prolific which is why I'm glad I copped a lot of their tunes from my mom's collection the last time I was back East......when one door closes, many more will open...today, while chatting with Micki ...I got a little bad news from one of my agents about a gig I was working on and instead of focusing on the raw deal I got, I slapped on some Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff productions to lift my spirits and during the course of our chat , I got another offer (not the same money but for a longer stretch of time and closer to the crib, so I'm not grousing)...perhaps the fog of what Marvin Gaye called "bad breaks and set-backs" has dissipated and won't make me holler and throw up both my hands just yet...I still got my tunes and a deeply ingrained love for it (if you're on here reading this, then you're feeling me)...never forget to use your tunes to get through whatever bad shite comes your way-- to remember the positives and whatnot (like kicking it with mein fräulein does for me)...having said all of that, this O'jays classic got me skipping over cracks in the sidewalk; it's all butter, baby...keep on MOGGIN...

  3. mickimicki says That's overly optimistic... when you still got music, you're not feeling real bad... real bad is when even blues and Leonard Cohen get on your nerves because they're so fucking cheerful... (fatalistic words of wisdom from a MOOOOOOOODY person)... thank god I'm not _that_ moody today. The tunes are cool... you don't happen to have "TSOP" floating around somewhere? Time I went to a freaking DISCO...

  5. kat3260 says Had no clue who Gamble & Huff were - I'm pretty slack when it comes to the producing end of music (but I'm resolving to be more conscious of it). And I've always lived like Penny Lane said, _'if you ever get lonely, just go to the record store and visit your friends."_

  8. 9Mile says "When one door is closed many more are open." Nice quote from the man himself (see my avatar). If you don't mind my saying: don't ever give up on your music, passion is what pulls creative souls like us through this gauntlet of money-making-delerium that is life in this place and this time.

  9. CrashPryor says @9Mile: That's word, son. And now, a mini post...Bob's power as a "musical avatar" and shaman are not lost on me...take this opening to the "*One Love Peace Concert*":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/One_Love_Peace_Concert (where he got Michael Manley and Edward Seaga-- warring political leaders for those who might not know) to join hands in peace on stage-- a true testament to the power of music...he opened the whole affair Nyabinghi style with the song below..."see 'em fighting for power, but they know not the hour"...on the strength, brother Bob...

  11. 9Mile says "The moon was high above my head and I give my LOVE instead..Now where are you?" - Bob Marley calling the leaders of the PNP and the JLP to join him on stage and commit with him to "Love, Peace, Prosperity," - for the people of the island. Bob's outfit that night is so incredibly great. Wish it was displayed somewhere.

  15. Mike the Knife says As a Philly dawg (born and bred), I have a particular soft spot for the Gamble-Huff sound, C.P. And not to bring anything or anyone down, I've been digging for my fave Harold Melvin & the Blue Notes track, "Bad Luck" - which sports one of the greatest bass parts in all of funk. Maybe a little "Bad Luck" will bring on a little good luck.

  16. Cody B says Kickin' the truth as usual. Gamble and Huff sure did work! As a non-musician I still find all their stuff , even the Disco jams,to be pretty damn musical. The messages are uplifting, too. I still remember NYC clubbing in the 80's, when stuff like the O'jays would come on late, late at night and revive the dancefloor. You, of course, will pull through..you've got it goin' on,Crash! As to the forgotten soul list..Wow! I guess it matters who forgot them..Not me, but how 'bout for starters: Bill Withers-Grandma's hands James Carr- Pouring Water on a Drowning Man Syl Johnson- Different Strokes Millie Jackson- It Hurts So good Freda Payne- Bring The Boys Home Delfonics- Ready or Not Chi Lites- Stoned Out of My Mind Stylistics- Betcha By Golly ,Wow Donny Hathaway-Someday We'll all be free Chaka Khan- Circles War- Summer Billy Paul- Am I Black Enough for ya? Rufus Thomas- The Funky Penguin The Staple Singers- Let's do it Again Shirley Brown-Woman To Woman Bobby Womack-I Can Understand It Labelle- Somehting In The Air/The revolution Will Not Be Televised Maze- Joy and Pain Howard Tate- Stop The Spinners-Honest I Do
