All's I'm Saying: Give Peace Frog a Chance

Posted almost 5 years ago
...I'll jump the gun on my Funky Friday post by throwing this on...what can I say, Ioves that older, analog shite and I'll be the first to tell you that when I think of Funk, images of Jim Morrison don't immediately come to mind for most, but I must say that for a moment, at least on one track, the one I'm posting below, Mr. Mojo Risin and his crew got stanky widdit...I was reminded of it, for some strange reason during a conversation that I just had with Micki re: Aristsophanes' play "*Lysistrata*":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lysistrata as it pertains to our current geographical situation and what's going on in current affairs on the world stage..."Peace Frog" which originally dropped back in 1970 on an LP that yielded no major hits in comparison to the LPs before it, still, however, remains one of my favorite Doors outings as it contains cuts like "Waiting for the Sun", "Blue Sunday", "Ship of Fools", "Land Ho!", "Queen of the Highway", "Indian Summer", "Maggie M'Gill" and the cut below...I don't know what it is about this LP or this tune, specifically...maybe its just because I'm a lover, not a fighter...PEACE OUT....

  1. CrashPryor says ...and this one, which closes out the set, points to the stuff that the group would pursue on their next and ultimate album as a unit, LA Woman..is that some reggae in there too?...check it... ~MmlbKmABNmj.mp3~

  2. Mike the Knife says Oh, man! Gotta lay down some love for "Roadhouse Blues," my abso numero uno on Morrison Hotel. Perhaps the most bass-ass number from ol' Jimbo. Wigs me out every time. Makes me wanna grab myself a beer - to quote the Bard.

  3. PopeyePete says I havent listened to The Doors in a long time. This song brought me right back. We all have a history of music that has really affected us and The Doors is one of those bands that really had an influence on me personally. Jim will always be the James Dean of rock n roll to me. He was a great musical artist of his time.

  5. Mike the Knife says BTW, I truly dig "Peace Frog," too, but never got the title...

  6. mktackabery says Great stuff. Makes you want to play the if only game . . . nah. That was a tight band.

  7. CrashPryor says @Mikey: word, that is a tight little jam...makes me wanna "belly-up" as well whenever I hear it...man, I miss real "leave a beautiful corpse" rock stars...never "got" the title either but I like peace and have nothing against frogs, so it works for me! @Popeye: I find myself listening to selective cuts/ LPs on the regs but not on a daily basis. Woulda thunk that they'd actually embody what the rock 'n roll aesthetic is all about... @msquared: on this LP, fer shizzle..."The End" is hands down my favorite track in Morrison's oeuvre, though.. @michelle: I hear you...some things are best left unsaid...they'd all be locked up in the stoney lonesome if they tried to pull that shite off these days...

  9. Jonh Ingham says Wonderful song, wonderful album, wonderful band. 'Come play with us in forests of azure'....'It comes out of the Texas swamp with a backbeat narrow and hard to master...' Jim really had a smooth flow.

  10. mickimicki says I've actually heard "Peace Frog" played in a funk set many many years ago. I was kinda surprised to hear _that_ but it fit in just fine. (In fact I still remember the place, it was at a North London pub called Disgraceland. Weird the things a scatterbrain like me remembers!)

  11. fistula spume says For a second there I thought you were posting about that picture of the frog giving the peace sign. There's a wiki on this song and it says: "Peace Frog" was originally called "Abortion Stories"; guitarist Robby Krieger gave the song its more tame title, "Peace Frog.". Fun fun. Love me some Doors.

  12. wassonii says Kind of appropriate Fistula's time is given as 4:20. How did we go from men with big (and not so big:()columns and women saving the day to the Doors?:) A good track here, but I'm with you on The End. I don't know that I can trust a self-professed rock band without a bass player, although my wife has been rekindling my kind ear to the sounds of The Doors. Funk nonetheless, even onna Sunday night. We just had Southern Writers' Project weekend, so the funk is being savoured.
