WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

Championship Mogging #13: When Trading Your Records, Don't Watch Channel Zero

Posted over 2 years ago
...I just shot down to Amoeba Records to exchange some albums and DVD's and got FIVE TIMES the amount I would've gotten if I'd went to Penny Lane Records...those fuggin' *bastuhs!!!* There's nothing worse than going to trade in your tunes somewhere and that feeling of getting raked over the coals begins to wash over you while some slack-jawed mook examines your albums/ CDs, etc. with a jeweler's monocle, in this instance it was a teenager who wouldn't know the difference between the White Album and Young, Gifted and Black (or what "A Touch of Grey" referred to) ...is she taking a piss or what???...once again, Amoeba has proven itself to be THE record store of choice for those of us residing in CALI ("*some interior pictures here*":http://chronicridicule.blogspot.com/2007/03/amoeba-music-micki-andkeith-morris.html ) ...once the guy at Amoeba told me what the real deal was, the chorus to this Flipper song came to mind...

  2. Iren says When "White and Nerdy":http://mog.com/White_and_Nerdy were cleaning out the Black Eyed Mansion in the spring/ Summer of 2002 we made weekly trips to two local shops to sell records and books for grocery money... first we would head to a local book store called Dawn Treader, after the boat in the C.S. Lewis book of the same name... and watch as they would dig though our box of books.... these books that we paid maybe fifty or sixty dollars for... and they would offer us five or six dollars for all of them.... we took to calling the store Dawn Rapers after one trip where one of the books we had sold them for a dime was being sold for $3.50... we stopped going there and donated books to the friends of the library... The other store, the wonderful "Encore Recordings":http://www.encorerecordings.com/, have (I hope still have) what I think is the fairest and best pricing scheme I have ever witnessed... if they gave you $3 for something they would sell it for six, so you ended up getting half... perfect... they also price everything so that with tax the price comes out to the nearest whole dollar or the nearest dollar plus $0.50....

  3. Mike the Knife says Hate to let go of some stuff, but occasionally it must be done. And there are a handful of possible outlets in San Fran, but I tend to hit the Amoeba on Haight first. That said, I've found some real disparity between the buyers there. Some'll do ya right, and some won't. Some are cool, and some are dicks. I find myself refraining from a visit unless a reliable buyer is on duty. Annoying - and true.

  9. CrashPryor says @Iren: that's so FUCKED! I don't even take my old books in anymore...they really rob you at bookstores in LA (at least the ones I went to)... @Mikey: Yeah, but my place is kinda tight and space is at a premium (Blessed be the CD Burn/ Ripping capabilities of the computer)...I'm now born-again-hard on using Amoeba, Los Angeles for all my transactions...still, I'm certain that there are a grip of cool shops around San Fran that know their shite, Penny Lane is just an out-and-out rip off.... @michelle: "if you build it they will come"... @Lady Miss: .: yeah, I hate when someone who knows dick about music is giving me the "appraisal eyeball"...when she told me the amount and rang up the receipt, I was like "no thanks, I'm sure I'll get a much better price over at Amoeba"...felt good to be correct, hence the Flipper tune... @Anna: you could say that and you'd be correct....if you ever get out here on the coast, go check 'em...(Grepsi Cola, optional)...

  11. nicki says Hit Amoeba every time I'm in San Fran. Which has been all of twice. Still. It's bliss. Nice to know they do ya right in buying used stuff, too.

  12. Jonh Ingham says In London, go to Record and Tape Exchange in Notting Hill. They will buy ANYTHING. But they also give you full value. If you're selling some rare 12" remix and you don't know it, they will not take advantage of you. Unlike anywhere else in this great city. Respect.
