Library Album Find#3: Sleater-Kinney's Last Jam

Posted over 2 years ago
I'm telling you, the wonders abound at the 'ole book hole...here's another LP I found by a group that was good but I was too busy to get into when they were out and about, Sleater-Kinney...if you're one of my trusteds, then you already know that I loves my chicks with picks..so when I saw it, I recognized the name from my mental rolodex of "bands I oughta check but never really did." I've heard cuts and slices at parties but that doesn't just get in the noggin' (if you partied like I used to)...at any rate, I'm loving this album which streeted in 2000, about the time I moved back to L.A. from the Big Apple...check this shit out...

  2. jenny says I really like this album, too. Have you heard Dig Me Out...that's my favorite, one of a handful of albums that coaxed me out of my "opera" period right after my son was born. (For some reason, I lost all interest in rock music for about a year...hormone shift I guess.) so, yeah, like this one, liked One Beat, missed Hot Rock but I *hated* The Woods and got into all kinds of trouble for it. I had people writing me telling me that I should get a job cleaning toilets if I couldn't say nicer things about it.

  3. 1234chainsaw says Saw them live a couple of times, pretty incendiary. Dig Me Out and All Hands are probably my favorites. I did really like The Woods as well, but I can understand why one wouldn't. (I confess that part of my reason for liking The Woods may be that the album's style allowed Carrie Brownstein totally to rip on guitar, proving her worthy of the low-grade crush I've always had on her :D)

  4. CrashPryor says @Jenny: I've heard dribs and drabs but will now search it out when I'm at Amoeba or Penny Lane...I was in a heavy hard bop phase around the time they dropped but my palate has shifted back to it's "omnivorousness" as the Knife would call it... @scotfree: ...that's what recordable DVDs are for...I'll peep it...thanks @chainsaw: ah, the infamous punk musician crush is a bug that's bitten us all, so don't feel too bad...

  5. Pseudo Cyborg says I, too, have to say that "Dig Me Out" and "All Hands" are the tops. "The Hot Rock" is another favorite, too. I'm glad I had a chance to see them live a few years ago. It was while they were touring for "One Beat", another great. Shannon Wright opened up for them. She blew my mind as well. I had written about that show on one of my old blogs. I'll see if I can dig that up and post it here.

  6. Pseudo Cyborg says So, of course, after reading this I put on "All Hands" and immediately went back to the moment I heard they were going on their "indefinite hiatus", remembering that feeling of disappointment - not in them, but that it could very well be "the end". All three are amazingly talented musicians (Janet is one of my drumming influences). Musician crush. Hmm. I'd never heard it put like that but, yeah, we've all had 'em.

  7. KezOnTour says Jenny - I hated The Woods too... people think I'm a freak because of that! I saw the Kinney perform in Manchester just after The Woods was released, and of course that's all they played. I've never felt SO let down by a band :( I loved Hot Rock and All Hands On the Bad One.

  8. Mike the Knife says Crash the Omnivore! Way cooler than Conan the Barbarian or Mandrake the Magician (although ya gotta love Mandrake's top hat and cape). Anyhow, I'm with Pseudo, re: All Hands... and Dig Me Out. A boot in the derriere, times two.

  9. CrashPryor says @Pseudo: word. Thanks, man... @Kez: will keep an eye out for Hot Rock, too... @Mikey: I always dug "The Great Kweskin's" handle, myself...this LP has definitely put me on the Sleater-Kinney case...
