"Marie's the Name"...THANKYUHVERYMUCH

...I know this is a far cry from my earlier post and am aware of the unsavory side of what went down back in the day but I must admit that there are a few Elvis songs that I listen to on the regs...not the high-collared, Fat-jumpsuit stuff (though I have been caught singing "Suspicious Minds" in the shower)...no, I like the older stuff (surprise Trusteds!) like two of the cuts he dropped back in the summer of '61 that can be found on the LP Something for Everybody: the semi-operatic "Surrender" and the acoustic guitar-driven jam below...

  2. Dale says When The Smiths took a stab at this cut on the Rank CD, it rocked out loud. Good call Crash, an artist's latter-day transgressions do not mean we have to throw out their entire oeuvre.

  4. Mike the Knife says The King lives on! I'm a real "Mystery Train" fan, not to mention "Wear My Ring Around Your Neck" and (gulp) "Viva Las Vegas." As much as I love the basic verse and chorus of "Suspicious Minds" (and sing along myself), I don't much like that slow-down he does about two-thirds through the track. Still, monsterous!

  5. Jonh Ingham says For me this may be Elvis' finest moment. It's a cracking arrangement and the way he glides on those changes into the chorus is magic. The 54 - 56 and Vegas periods get the attention, but this may be his best period - not just this but 'One Night' and 'I Got Stung' and 'Viva Las Vegas' and.... Good call.

  6. CrashPryor says @Pimp: yeah, I'd be a liar if I said I didn't check a few of his tracks...I couldn't get with his worldview, although, as Chuck D put it: "he's a hero to most" @Dale: Yeah...something like that @michelle: a lot of the late stuff was just out-and-out bad...this would fall under the "real deal" category. @Mikey: yeah, I zone out during that part too...but that pomp it opens with is kinda funny to emulate...I do the fingers-to-sky and everything... @Ingham: indeed, a perfect pop song on all counts...the guits pull you in and the story keeps you there..."Devil in Disguise" is a great shower song too, btw..
