...the Vonnegut stuff I wrote about earlier got me thinking about why I started writing (Kurt, James Baldwin and Hunter S. Thompson are three of my influences) and then I got to thinking about when I started playing music which ties into Hip Hop Thursday...Back when I was fifteen, I was in a hip hop crew comprised of three rappers and a DJ and the first jam we ever created was done to the break beat in Brick's "Dazz" a cut from the Atlanta-based funksters' Good High LP from 1976...the first lyrics I ever wrote to toast it up at parties went like this: "Renegade of my trade here to rock and raid, doin' my best to manifest so check the flow as it's laid...It's like that, I'm sharper than the average Jack; suckers retreatin' to my beat 'cause I'm down with the pack...They call us noble, not one, we're three of a kind..." aaaaaand that's about all I can remember...Dazz was and still is a breakbeat classic...I'm surprised nobody's used it in a hip hop context the way we did...see if the rhyme still fits...
