Dazz and a Blast from the Past: Breakbeats 101

Posted over 2 years ago
...the Vonnegut stuff I wrote about earlier got me thinking about why I started writing (Kurt, James Baldwin and Hunter S. Thompson are three of my influences) and then I got to thinking about when I started playing music which ties into Hip Hop Thursday...Back when I was fifteen, I was in a hip hop crew comprised of three rappers and a DJ and the first jam we ever created was done to the break beat in Brick's "Dazz" a cut from the Atlanta-based funksters' Good High LP from 1976...the first lyrics I ever wrote to toast it up at parties went like this: "Renegade of my trade here to rock and raid, doin' my best to manifest so check the flow as it's laid...It's like that, I'm sharper than the average Jack; suckers retreatin' to my beat 'cause I'm down with the pack...They call us noble, not one, we're three of a kind..." aaaaaand that's about all I can remember...Dazz was and still is a breakbeat classic...I'm surprised nobody's used it in a hip hop context the way we did...see if the rhyme still fits...

  4. Dale says I'd be down for Funky Fridays, although I wouldn't have much to contribute. I can only get so much mileage from Gang of Four. :)

  13. Cody B says Aaah, so here are the instigators of Funky Friday. I should've figgered that out. I'm there. BTW, the single track you have here is awesome, but the album version sports a killer flute solo. F..ing greatest hits on Sony sez on the back cover that it is the 5+ minute album version, but play the CD and it isn't. The man robbed me of my flute solo.Damn. As to sampling, I checked on "The Breaks.com":http://www.the-breaks.com/ and found these: * “Dazz” BG Knocc Out ft Dresta’s “Compton & Watts” Cash Money & Marvelous’s “The Music Maker” Caveman’s “Cool Coz I Don't Get Upset” Compton's Most Wanted’s “Compton 4 Life” Dana Dane’s “Cinderfella Dana Dane” Das EFX ft Redman’s “Rap Scholar” DJ Quik’s “Dollars & Sense” Ice Cube’s “No Vaseline” Insane Clown Posse’s “Nuthin' but a Bitch Thang” MC Lyte’s “Search 4 the Lyte” Real Roxanne’s “Howie's Tee'd Off” Snoop Dogg’s “Snoopafella” Young Soldierz’s “Eastside Westside” Is it Friday yet. Thanks Crash etal

  15. CrashPryor says @Dale: "funkiness" is subjective, so as long as it's got a funky groove, you should be sorted out... @CooP: me neither but I think I heard the breaks in it a thousand times over during rehearsals back in the day....but that was years ago... @mund0: we're all sonic "track-hos" up in this piece, I guess you've figured already...to quote Pookie/ Chris Rock in New Jack City in reference to getting funktified: "it be calling me...it be callin'... @michelle: saw "*your post*":http://mog.com/mktackabery/blog_post/62749 thanks for hooking that up...now lets see what's in the offing. @Cody: nice researching, I don't recall all of these tunes (you know my take on the newer stuff) but now that you mention it, Cash Money, Dana Dane, MC Lyte, the Real Roxanne and Ice Cube all seem vaguely familiar...niceness.

  16. SamTheButcher says I was going to say, I thought this was clipped in a Slick Rick song, but Cody righted me that it was Dana Dane. Simliar style and flow, IIRC. Good stuff. :) Fuckin' great track. Can't wait to take part in Funky Fridays. :)
