A Mog (Love) Supreme: Get a Little Home Trane-ing

Posted almost 5 years ago
...when I got in tonight I was feeling "rode hard and put away wet" as my uncle Duck used to say...tired...like I used to be after running around the streets of New York City all day long...that hasn't happened in a while since I moved to LA, so tonight, just as I often used to do when I finally got to my 3rd floor walk-up after a day like this back in the Big Apple, I'm going to pour me a stiff one and slap on some 'Trane...if you listen to a lot of jazz, you'll know this one straight out the gate but that doesn't mean that JC's fire wasn't eloquently represented, a desert island track if ever there was one... this is one of those joints that quantify why I always say John Coltrane is STILL the man and fuck the cliches-- some things are just the truth and can only be said in the same way...don't believe me? Well, pull up a chair, give it a spin and don't forget to get in nice and close-- Coltrane can peel your wig back once he starts rolling...check it...

  4. Dale says Ahhhhhhh. My nerves are kinda frayed this morning, that helped tremendously.

  5. CrashPryor says @JonH: I know! Same thing with the Miles Smiles LP ("Orbits", "Footprints" and "Gingerbread Boy" are all on it too)...hmmmm maybe a future post on that tip is in order... @kat: yeah, I like the way Spike Lee utilized it in the "birthing sequence" on Mo Better Blues to tie everything together in the story arc-- he lets this song play in its entirety...peep the film when you get the chance. @Stottle: ...and that's word, brothermean...check "*that Miles Davis LP*":http://www.amazon.com/Miles-Smiles-Davis/dp/B00000DCH1 I mentioned above, if you're game. @Dale: coolness...it did the trick for my frazzled synapses last night too...

  6. Marco1019 says This was the perfect tonic for my morning. Like Dale, I have some nerves because of a big day that lies ahead, but those nerves are gone, gone gone...

  8. starstuff says We did a bit of this in church on Sunday a few weeks ago. Imagine the entire congregation chanting along with a solo acoustic bassist... "a love supreme, a love supreme, a love supreme ...." I'm not sure everyone grasped the depth of the music / spirituality connection there, but many did, and it was wonderful and meditative. That chant is Trane's launching pad and the thematic spine on this track.

  9. Oatmeal says Amazing track, makes you feel refreshed after a long day. Reminds me that I used to have a copy of that RED HOT AND COOL cd with this song on it, or was it a cover? Or was it a hip hop song with the sample? Anyone remember what i am talking about? It was one of those AIDS awareness and fund-raiser series. There were some Spearhead, Digable Planets, Pharcyde, Lost Poets, Guru, etc. tracks. I would love to get a hold on that one again. Lost that cassette years ago

  10. Cody B says In a long ago and not remebered post someone made, they asked for 1 song you would be able to listen to in a desert isle type setting. I picked this. Beyond a good song, it is worthy of worship.

  12. improvMusicFan says Trane's the man! A Love Supreme is timeless. Have you heard David Murray do the orchestral arrangement of Coltrane's Giant Steps? He takes a nine piece band and arranges Trane's solo. A bit chaotic sounding, but impressive. I'll put an entry up about it soon...

  13. CrashPryor says @Marco: right on! That mean's it's working.. @steve: yeah, I won't even go into the play counts but I will say this-- if I'm listening, please don't talk to me after Trane's solo starts, otherwise I have to go back and hear it from the beginning... @starstuff: interestingly enough, that's how JC felt about playing-- it was a spiritual journey...he was way on the other side of "om" before it became chic.. @Oatmeal: I looked around for that album you mentioned (the title and talent sounded verrry familiar) but no luck...I hate when that happens... @Cody: You're definitely preaching to the choir, brothermean... @mund0: Nice...slap on "Miles' Mode" if you can find it...that goes well with rain too... @ImprovMusic: I have now, thanks to your post, very strange hearing what Coltrane heard in his head while he was playing being played...all of the different paths taken simultaneously... Like I said, he's "*the Heavyweight Champ*":http://chronicridicule.blogspot.com/2006/09/john-coltrane-heavyweight-champion-ad_18.html

  14. redgoddess60 says Hmmm, Sunday morning, the smell of Pine Sol, sunshine and french toast or maybe waffles creepin' into my bedroom. Moms in the kitchen with a soft smile on her face, swayin' to some Coltrane. Funny how a song sets you to travelin' through time.

  15. CrashPryor says ...word, redgoddess...being from the south, as was Coltrane, I'm certain that those sentiments imbued a lot of what he did...click that link in my comment just above as there's mention of a tune that he recorded called "Cousin Mary" which totally evoke those memories that you just spoke on...good stuff..
