THE MUSIC BLOGGING HIVE MIND

Who's THAT Lady for You?

Posted over 2 years ago
(written on the subway, so don't mind the bumps)...I've always thought of my relationship with my music to be not unlike a long-running affair with a loyal lover, it's been there with me when the backstabbers were legion as well as when the times were flush, thick and thin...but sometimes, admittedly, I've felt like I've heard it all before (and I have, technically, at least everything in my iPod)...I've been through a Clash stint wherein "Know Your Rights" and "Car Jamming" went well with my coffee (I still say "Overpowered by Funk" is one of their most under-rated recordings)...back when I was a teen, I used to love waking up with a little Bob Marley and the Wailers, specifically, the Uprising album which starts with that acoustic guitar refrain and rolls on into "Coming in from the Cold" (this is probably the album that I turned my mom onto reggae with as I did it religiously for the whole of my junior year)...the names have blurred together over the years, I'll go through moods with playlist names like JoniMingusHendrixSmithsCashSelecterDMC... but again, there's times I only want to hear one particular act for days straight...like the time when all I wanted to hear were the Isley Brothers, specifically the stuff they cut during their funky-electric 70s phase...having grown up a bit since 1973 when the IBs dropped their 3 +3 album which held a funky-ass version of "Summer Breeze" which is still blowing through the jasmine of my mind... ...I'd like to think my musical tastes have become more refined, the internal taste-maker had gotten more adroit at selecting the platters that matter at the the drop of a hat but such is not the case...I just know what I like, I listen to the little DJ inside and when I want it, I go straight to it, like I'm about to do right now as I'm in the mood for a little rock but I'm also down with a little funk...say, "That Lady (Parts 1 & 2)" would fit the bill...as I'm also thinkin' of my lady...it's on like popcorn...

  1. mund0tronica says it's weird how when you go back to revisit some of the stuff from the days of yore, it feels a little thin in comparison to what you feel are the lush beats of the present. and in time, those beats will run thin. a good track is one that stays lush with the passing of time. enjoyed this post immensely.

  2. mktackabery says liked this post and the pic crash. music always fits the bill. I do think that is the beauty of the little music player with you, you can have so much music on tap so when you need that perfect song, you only have to find it and you have sanity in your ears. If bliss is just one track away, how bad can life be?

  3. Cody B says Nice. Sometimes only Ernie will do. No matter what decade, The Isleys always seem to know exactly where "it" is at.

  4. thill says let me second your vote for Overpowered by Funk (funk out baby)! i recently just got over a dry spell. sometimes those times appear and the usual tried and true won't even do the trick. then one day you turn on the radio or you hear a snippet of a song and the trance is broke and you are back on. the old is new again, the birds are singing in the trees, there is a skip in your step, and all is good in the world. after reading your post i am kicking myself for not checking out the old school soul boxed set out from the library last week. must get to the library TODAY.

  5. ivylander says Pretty amazing, when you think about it - four-plus decades, and very, very few wrong moves. Even when they do something that seems calculated and market-driven, they always make it completely their own.

  6. Rawkkiddoh says Nice, while some might consider listening to the same act over and over a musical rut, I always felt it was much more than that. When you find a group that speaks to you, you have no choice but to listen.

  7. redgoddess60 says To paraphrase; "Lookin' back on when I was a little nappy headed girl"....I had a serious Stevie Wonder thing goin' on. I will always remember lifting up the needle at the end of 'Boogie On Reggae Woman' and carefully setting it down back at the beginning. Over and over. So much so, that as much as Moms loved Stevie, she bought me those big ol' headphones so she could have some peace and quiet. Oh, how I was stuck; rolling around in the sounds that man made, feeling it slide over my skin. Yeah.

  8. Mike the Knife says Some of the great stuff is just gonna be with you, offering succor and funk, for eternity...and that's a good thing.
