...I mean seriously, Duran Duran teamed up with Grand Masters Flash and Melle Mel to do a cover version of the hip hop classic "White Lines" which I think was one ot the first 'just say nope' type rap tunes (and no, the VH-1 behind the musak irony isn't lost on me but you gotta give 'em an "A" for effort)...by 1995 a Duran Duran set of covers of the tunes that influenced them seemed to arrive a day late and a dollar short, still, I always thought the jacket for the "*Thank You*":http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:ji4zefrk8gf1 album was, er, dope (where else you gonna find Mr. Mojo Risin and Flava Flave in the same context?)...*variety, yo*...it's the spice of life...

Funny this should come up Crash, I was just reminiscing about my college years on Zero's mog post. When this album came out, my roommate was in love with Ordinary World and became fixated on this album. Seeing that most of our floor listened to Jimmy Buffet and AC/DC, we were quickly called the odd couple. I had New Order "Regret" on heavy rotation at the time. While I feel the album as a whole was not the best, I admired them for going after the songs that influenced them over the years. That alone made me enjoy the album that much more.

Now this is freaky - I noticed White Lines on You Tube this morning and had to grab a taste just to hear Doug Wimbush's monster bass. You open up an interesting line of thought here -- can boys from Birmingham assimilate hip hop as well as the West London gang (aka The Clash)?
It's a fabulous cover, but Jimbo and Flava aren't that strange a mix when you think of Jay Z sampling Five To One. And there's another track whose name escapes me that builds an absolutely killer loop on the opening of Break On Through. Certainly puts a different spin on 'the negroes in the forest brightly feathered say come play with us in forests of azure', doesn't it?!

interesting question, that, JI...but still, as album covers go, Flav and Morrison always seem to capture my eye when I look at that cover...it's poster-worthy (if it hasn't been made one already)..

It's a really commanding cover, isn't it? Each photo is the iconic image of that artist and it is a very strange mix. Hobo-period Dylan and Flav...that's an interesting one as well.

Alls I know is this mash-up lovin' sonofagun thought that jam was slammin' - Duran or not. (Another forgotten gem unearthed at MOG, C.P. Good one.)

This record was recently voted in the British press as the worst album of all time. Unfortunately, even as a serious Duran Duran fan, I agree.

I love Duran Duran, so I'm biased, but I think this cd is way to heavily criticized. I appreciate the fact that they are so diverse. OK, I'll admit that "911 is a Joke" is not my favorite Duran song of all time....but "Perfect Day" is beautiful, "White Lines" rocks, and the rest of the cd is really good. The cover is great too. Anyway....there's my biased opinion!
