Get Up, Stand Up--Now Get Back to Work...

Posted about 5 years ago
...Years ago when I worked as a cook at Bridgetown Grill in Little Five Points Atlanta, my mornings started early as in 7AM; the cooks would get in there, bleary eyed (we'd be hungover from sucking down pitchers at the Euclid Avenue Yacht Club the previous evening 90% of the time) to start prepping everything that needed prepping which entailed doing a grip of slicing and dicing (this was a Jamaican/ Cuban joint)...what was our cure for the hair of the dog? Why music, since you asked...Not a week went by that we didn't slap on a little Bad Brains in the morning to get the blood pumpin' through the cracks in our eyeballs; for a little reprieve before the bum's rush of huddled masses jonesin' for jerked chicken came through the doors...Bad Brains' Quickness was one of our faves...I got up this morning feeling a little "less-than-stellar" after a long night of typing while huddled over a computer screen...and now it's time to do it all over again...but first...a little Soul Craft, yo...

  5. CrashPryor says @P-frenzy: even if he doesn't admit it...he'll thank you for it when he's "slingin' blades... @Kino: yeah man, back in the 90s when L5P was still poppin', I went back a few years back for the first time and it was a shadow of it's old self...good times... @JI: It's good for what ails ya...trust... @Wassonii: you probably did, it was a popular spot for a minute...that guava bread and black & white soup...you ever need some of the BTG recipes, I'm your man...can still whip up those salsas, sauces and soups from scratch, son...writing's a lot cleaner (but still I feel just as worn out afterwards sometimes-- guess I've always been a sucker for punishment, yo...)

  6. Rawkkiddoh says If you haven't done so already Crash, check out the live cd from Dillinger 4. They were supposed to play with Bad Brains, and Bad Brains had to cancel. They play the phone message H.R. left for them it's pretty classic.

  8. etcvisitor says just a side note regarding the title of this mog, when i was 5 or 6 i really thought the bob marley song "get up stand up" was "get up santa". i had no idea why he was singing that especially in relation to the rest of the lyrics, but i sang along anyway. back to the the topic though, bad brains at 7 AM is sometimes the only way to really get the day started. ive found that slayer's seasons in the abyss can also be helpful for that first early morning jump kick... yes, if i am up that early i usually have to do atleast one jump kick before i can do anything properly.

  11. El Monko and Son says Did you ever go to that cajun joint with the deck that did alligator tail and buffalo shrimp and blue cocktails in fishbowls into which they would jam a rubber alligator full of grenadine when they served it? It was alright.
