...I first saw Primus live in the early 90s back on the east coast when they were opening for Fishbone in this big-ass venue in DC..."Tommy the Cat" was the first jam they played and as soon as Les Claypool struck the first note on his bass, the pit started bunny-hopping until the end of the set..."*Sailing the Seas of Cheese*":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P+++++5181&a_id=R++++15769&PersonID=P%20%20%20%20%205181&prodid=ISC91659.2&si=rhino is still one of my favorite funk-prog-rock albums; contains cuts that I still check on the regular like "Sgt. Baker", "Eleven", "Is it Luck", "Fish On", "Jerry was a Racecar Driver" and, of course "Tommy the Cat"--I found out years later that Primus got Tom Waits to record the voice of Tommy for this cut...no matter how wiggy Les gets, he'll always have this joint (and to a lesser degree Frizzle Fry) to his credit...although the band's been posted on before, I wanted to throw up "Tommy the Cat" which hasn't:

Great vid!
Man - Fishbone...There is another band I have neglected for far too long - I had one semester in college where "Truth and Soul" was basically the Soundtrack for my life...My roomates and I probably listened to this 2-3 times a day...It got into pretty regular rotation on my playlist again a few years ago, but then dropped back out again...
I think I'll revisit it at some point this weekend...
As always, thank you...

I love this disc. It's been a while since I've listened to it at home, but they have it on the jukebox where I play pool. It gets spun there. It also comes up fairly regularly on my Launch station. As far as I'm concerned, there is no better Primus disc.

I saw Primus and Fishbone here in Buffalo back then. What an amazing show. I still will bust out "Sailng..." just to remeber what it was like to hear a new kind of music, ya know? I don't get that feeling much anymore....
I would love to see Waits do ths song live with them..!

aother of the very early 90's shows I had seen at the now defunct Cameo in Washington Square , Miami Beach. it was beyond new for me, they threw these shadows of themselves on the wall and I kept thinking , the bass is playing lead funk/rock and the guitar is playing jazz while this drummer is fucking metal.....wtf? amazing......

Been listening to "Of Whales and Woe"; never having been a big fan of Primus it takes some getting used to but there is just something totally in the groove with Les.

Les is on my short list of performers I still need to see in person. I'm looking forward to that parody film he's got coming out, "Electric Apricot":http://www.electricapricot.com/

I've seen some Electric Apricot previews.....should be awesome.
AAhhhh Fishbone. One of the greats.I rememeber one of there albums I listened to all the time for like and entire summer. The album escapes me but it's the one with "Sunless Saturday" at the end.
Anyway...last time I saw Primus, they played the entire Cheese album ......whole set was a little over three hours.....it was incredible.
CrashPryor says
nice, pETULENT...that would've been a sweet show to see...the Fishbone LP you're thinking of is "*Reality of My Surroundings*":http://mog.com/CrashPryor/blog_post/27861 it was their coup de grace...the summer it came out it (and Alice in Chains' Dirt album) was pretty much all I had in my walkman when I was on the road...got shite, son...

Mmm, gotta get me some of that.
It was many years ago when someone made a tape copy of Frizzle Fry (with Reality... on the other side - ha!). I agree with CG: kinda sounds like something new every time.

I was spoiled for this album by the fact that I grew up in the area where Primus got their start (Sonoma County/Bay Area), and we were passing around dubbed copies of their live EP, "Suck on This," before "Frizzle Fry" came out and well before "Sailing the Seas of Cheese." SoT had the "original" version of "Tommy The Cat" on it, and as awesome as Tom Waits is at nailing that character, it always came in second for me. And I've always liked FF more than SSC, although SSC is definitely a close second. Oodles of my friends were at the Phoenix the night Primus shot the video for Jerry, so watching that vid is like going back to my senior year of high school. If we'd had a House Band, Primus would've been it (and Mr. Bungle would have been their right-hand men).

*The Reality of my Surroundings*.
That's it!Thanks Crash!
Now I must go home and
a) dig out all my old fishbone
b) look up the name of that Mr.Bungle song you're talking about
I know the exact song you mean...just (once again) the title escapes me.
