Mazzy Star: Mood Music...If You're Man Enough...

Posted over 2 years ago
...I fell in Love with Mazzy Star's voice (Hope Sandoval) the first time I heard her sing, rather moodily, "Fade Into You" back in the early 90s... I was living in Atlanta at the time, so I shot over to Turtles and copped "*So Tonight That I Might See*":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P+++++4863&a_id=R+++190371&PersonID=P%20%20%20%20%204863&prodid=CAP98253.2- even the album's title had a bit of a 'tude...I bought the LP for the first cut but held on to it for slices like "Bells Ring"..."Five String Serenade"..."Blue Light"..."Into Dust"...who am I fooling, this whole friggin' LP is solid, though you'd have to be in a "mood" to soak it all in- tonight, I'm in such a mood...

  1. Zeroskilz says I used to listen to this album every night. My girlfriend (at the time) and I lived in a room the size of a walk-in closet. I had strung Christmas lights around the perimeter. We would put this album on and turn on the Christmas lights and "fight" for room in our twin size bed. Made for great nights.

  3. Truth says yeah...i did, too (fell for Hope Sandoval's enchanting voice when I heard Fade Into You). "She Hangs Brightly" is also a great album. About five years ago, I was at a dinner party where Hope Sandoval just happened to be one of the guests as well. And yes, she is as beautiful as her voice is.

  4. CrashPryor says Zeroskilz: "fIghting for room"..so THAT'S what the kids are calling it today...fairport: the one that used to be over on Buford Highway down where the 400 begins...Truth, I'm going to look up that Hope Sandoval...

  5. Zeroskilz says Crash, I don't know what the kids today are calling it, but it seemed like a good euphamism. It was college and it was over a decade ago. You do need to look up the She Hangs Brightly disc. It's just as good, for "fighting" or whatever. :)

  7. IslandSummer says I too have been a huge fan of that album since its initial release. Good moody stuff. What is NOT good stuff? Using the word 'slices' to describe songs (haha).

  8. Rawkkiddoh says Crash, Hope's voice is something special. All though I love that album, She Hangs Brightly is my favorite. Something in the was she sings Halah that gets me everytime. I have not yet picked up and of her solo stuff, any word on that?

  9. Zeroskilz says Rawk, I assume you are talking about her pre-Mazzy band Hope Sandoval and the Wam Inventions. Looks like it consists of one album and 2 EPs. Unfortunately, I haven't heard any of it and my music source doesn't have any of those albums either. What I find interesting is that she's also done a lot of work with other bands; including Air, Death in Vegas and the Chemical Brothers. According to her website, she has done some work on the upcoming Massive Attack album slated for 2/07.

  10. Nixne Svix says I think there are some Hope Sandoval albums post Mazzy Starr. I think I have one, or my buddy does. We will see...fro Wiki... "After 1996, Hope began a career of working with other bands. She collaborated with a series of artists, including Air, Bert Jansch, Death in Vegas, Le Volume Courbe, Richard X, The Chemical Brothers, The Jesus & Mary Chain, Twilight Singers, Vetiver, and Massive Attack." "Hope formed The Warm Inventions and released their first (and thus far only album) called "Bavarian Fruit Bread", in 2001. This album sounds, again, little different in terms of theme, voice, and instrumentation than that of her work with Mazzy Star. However, with a larger band behind her, and more time to work creatively, Hope's voice has matured on these songs. Subsequently, The Warm Inventions released three EPs but received very little commercial success, no video on MTV, and very little radio play. Nonetheless, this band's efforts were appreciated by her fan base. In live performance, Hope prefers to play in near darkness with only a dim backlight." Best part ? Her gnre acoording to Wiki is: "Dream Pop" now somebodies gonna make "dream emo"

  11. Zeroskilz says Nixine, you are correct. Hope's website doesn't have her discography in chronological order. Gotta learn to read dates.

  12. CrashPryor says - Rawk: Hope & the WI's "*Bavarian Fruit Bread,*":http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:yctxlfge0cqw released in 2001 is really, really tight...so is the *Suzanne EP* (especially the title track and "Friends of a Smile")...if you felt anything while listening to So Tonight That I Might See, you'll feel it again with fresh tunes...they're now in constant rotation when I sit down to scribe...BTW, if these two offerings don't sort you out, "*check out this list of collaborations*":http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:3v8o1vkozzma~T4

  14. Rawkkiddoh says Nice Crash, and I never get tired of seeing that face. One more thing that maybe you can help me out with, I thought I heard the reason Mazzy Star broke up is becaue Hope has an incredible fear of performing in front of crowds. Don't know if this is true, maybe you can clear it up.

  15. Zeroskilz says According to Nixine's Wiki excerpt, she like to basically perform in the dark. There could be something to that Rawk. I know the lead singer to Cat Power has issues. I "seen" her play at Radio Radio here in Indy. She performed her entire set sitting in a chair at the back of the stage. You couldn't see her. The music was good, but it was disappointing.

  16. CrashPryor says ...Fiona Apple's pretty shy like that too; I used to think ti was an act but there are artists who can work in the studio; on a film set (Kim Basinger) with no problem but get 'em out in front of a bunch of non-production people and agoraphobia kicks in big time...

  17. Rawkkiddoh says If I am correct, I thought Kim Bassinger said she has never even seen one of her own movies.

  18. Truth says Regarding Hope's shyness...I can validate that there is a lot of truth to that. I referenced this dinner party I attended a few years ago that she was also at. It was a fairly big crowd...I got to go as the date to a girl I was with at the time. (And even she was a couple degrees of seperation from the hosts.) Anyway, as we're driving over to Oakland from SF and we're talking about who is going to be at this shindig, she tells me the lead singer from Mazzy Star is going to be at this...but "don't talk to her about her music, her band, or anything like that because she's SUPER shy."
