Time Out: Happy Birthday Dave Brubeck

Posted over 3 years ago
...Today's Dave Brubeck's birthday, dude's 83 and though some might be salty that he made the cover of Time Magazine before Duke Ellington did, you can't deny that he and his Quartet (below) cut one of the phattest jazz LP's of all time: Time Out which not only holds the ground-breaking track "Take five" but two more of my hard-bop faves "Everybody's Jumping" ,"Blue Rhondo A La Turk", oh yeah, and "Three to Get Ready" is a funky-fresh track too, the whole set is a keeper by all means-- this very LP is probably why a whole heap of us are here right now...if your parents were cool like that back in the day...

  3. El Monko and Son says Yeah, Dave's alright. "Songs from Gone With the Wind" is also pretty good. His interview in Ken Burns' "Jazz" documentary is probably the only time I've gotten choked up listening to a white guy talk about how shitty racism is.

  4. lemontwist says Killer album. Thought he was 86? When I saw him back in October he was saying that his record company didn't want to release an album that was all original music and had a piece of artwork on the cover. They said it'd never sell. Ha! Dave Brubeck certainly had the last laugh. I think he's an amazing musician, and I totally love Time Out.
