WHERE MUSIC LISTENS TO YOU

My Tong Poo Connection: The Yellow Magic Orchestra & the Buddha

Posted over 3 years ago
...I was trawling around the iTunes Store for Yellow Magic's debut LP and Solid "State Survivor LP":http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=10:sgd5vwvta9ek to put in my iPod (they don't have either on there yet, to my chagrin)...if you've never heard the group's debut LP from back in the 70s check out the post that "contains the 'Firecracker' video here":http://mog.com/CrashPryor/blog_post/15488 ...it dawned on me (as I scrolled down on iTunes) that the Japanese composer/ electronica maestro had scored one of my favorite movies: Little Bhudda...there's a piece I wrote in the Chronicles of Ridicule about that film "on Siddhartha's Birthday":http://chronicridicule.blogspot.com/2005/05/om-namah-shivaya-happy-birthday.html that touched on some thoughts a while ago...check 'em both when you can...a great listen and a great flick...

  1. Spencer Owen says Dude, I just put "Rydeen" on a mix for Kate ... try going from ABBA's "Lay All Your Love on Me" into "Rydeen." You might flip out.

  2. Scarlett Echo says Wow. I have that on vinyl. I love "La Femme Chinoise." I love Ryuichi Sakamoto. I've never met a person IRL that even knows who Ryuichi is, let alone, Yellow Magic Orchestra. :)

  3. ilcv says Apparently, Yukihiro Takahashi's Neuromantic is one of several albums that feature Hosono and Sakamoto as well, but the closest to YMO stylistically. I saw a vinyl copy of YMO s/t at Amoeba when I was there, if that helps. You know, so you can set it next to your iPod.

  4. Mike the Knife says Oh, man. Love these guys. Gotta deliriously cool remix of "Behind the Mask." Can't get enough of their cover of Archie Bell and the Drells' "Tighten Up." (And I quote: "Sock it to me, Sakamoto!")

  5. dvh says All of YMO's albums have been issued on cd in Japan and I have all of their official releases on cd. Their music is so excellent.
