...before there was the Neville Brothers, there was "the Meters":http://allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:9908b5x4tsq4~T1 ...anybody who think that all these cats were about was world-beatish Louisiana stomps have never heard the funkily syncopated "Cissy Strut":http://www.rhino.com/store/digital/detail.lasso?upc=603497083060&si=rhino that the Meters cut back in the day...also, here's a "Meters Best of LP":http://www.rhino.com/store/ProductDetail.lasso?Number=72642&si=rhino that nobody should be without...I'm still surprised to note that nobody's sampled this big-ass-beat for a hip hop single...oops, did I say that out loud???

The Meters are simply about as raw groove funky gumbo as it gets. *Cabbage Alley* is fundamental. I was on a kick not too long ago where all I listened to was the Meters.
Anyone interested,I would recommend there LIVE stuff to start...especially there "buyou" and "moonwalker" session.
GREAT BLOG.
Also check out *Micky and the Soul Generation*...I'd dare to say they are equally as tasty (I know that's saying alot) as the Meters with just a tad more grit.

I'll look for the "aforementioned funk compilation" when I'm at Rhino on Monday...and let you guys know...a title would be nice as we have a lot of "funky old shite" on the books...anyone? anyone? Beuller? Beuller?...

The Meters are simply unparalleled. Put on that album "Look a Py-Py" at a party and anyone whose ass does not get shakin' is shown the door, no excuses.
Crash, David was probably talkin about this: "What It Is! Funky Soul and Rare Grooves (1967-1977)", streeted October 3.
