...I'd put up a post about TV on the Radio when I went to see them "open for Massive Attack at the Hollywood Bowl":http://rhinorecords.blogspot.com/2006/09/tv-on-radio-yo.html back in September...when I downloaded those TV shows I was talking about onto my iPod the other day, one of them were the first four episodes of Grey's Anatomy...on the wrap up montage of the fourth episode, the part where Izzy's reading a letter left by Denny (a patient that she'd had fallen in love with but had croaked b/c of heart trouble at the end of last season) the started piping in "Province", my favorite cut on TVOTR's "Return to Cookie Mountain LP":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P+++560230&a_id=R+++861319&search=tv%20on%20the%20radio&sec=all%20music&prodid=ISCB000746602.2&si=rhino , and I was simultaneously happy for the group but was wondering if they'd be considered sellouts because their music's included on the playback of a popular medical TV show...hmmmm...I still dig on the tune and probably shouldn't even plex...but, still, I wonder...

  1. Anna says Bah. I don't even believe in the term "sellout" to begin with. Musicians are people like the rest of us and they too have to make a living. As a listener, I say keep the music, lose everything else.

  2. SatisfiedMind614 says I dodn't buy into bands selling out anymore either. With all of the P2P file swapping and shady record companies...i say let them get their money while they can....bands have short shelf lives as earners.

  3. SWozniak says I buy into it. I wish more groups would stay indie and make a name for themselves. Ani Difranco has put out how many albums on her own label?

  6. SatisfiedMind614 says LOL...good point Anna...i know SO many college kids who will only buy INDIE records...because they are marketed as INDIE

  7. CrashPryor says 257?... I thought Ani had at least 365 (for every day of the year)...she definitely rocked that DIY thang...I'm not hatin' on her...

  8. SatisfiedMind614 says No...no hate for her here either....much respect for anyone with that many songs in her head...the girl had to get them out or she would probably go insane.

  9. SWozniak says What I meant was "independent." Which is more a political term for the music than a musical one.

  10. Anna says Shawn, I don't mean to fight or offend you or anything, you know I respect you, but I can say the same thing for independent (and expand it to movies, too). Just a humble opinion.

  14. SWozniak says Independent means that it's not on the big 4 corporate labels, who own over 80% of all music marketed in the world. TV on the Radio used to be on such a label for 4 albums, and have now "graduated" to a major label (Interscope, owned by Universal). I think that's what Crash is referring to, in addition to their having licensed that song to a TV show.

  23. SWozniak says Anna - I don't see a difference anymore, other than that word has been co-opted by the Big 4 to describe stuff they're not marketing as well as they could. Two examples: Regina Spektor. Not indie anymore since she signed with Sire (Warner Bros.-owned). Also, The Dresden Dolls (RoadRunner Records is owned by Universal). They're still great, but not indie.

  25. etcvisitor says D-I-Y til i D-I-E (E-I-E-I-O). i just wanted to add that selling out is really when you start doing things for the sake of making money and not because you love it. if you love what you do and pour your heart into it then it isnt selling out even if you do happen to make a living off of it. i know some truly independent musicians who hang out with TV on the Radio and i have never heard any of them say a single negative thing. i know anna wont rspond to my comments because she has grounded me for saying something not too flattering about greg dulli's facial structure, but it is a sad situation with the current usage of the word indie. that word used to mean something and now it means that someone is trying to play on your anti-industry emotions in order to sell you a CD. and all of these kids in $100 sweaters and designer nerd glasses are buying into it and thinking that they are revolutionaries while they sip their starbucks double triple decaf espressocino delux half caf latte del grande alto. whenever i use the word indie to describe someone they get offended and say "we dont play indie rock, we dont sound anything like that" and then i have to say "indie isnt a sound, it is a mindstate". so f the bullshit. im putting the pendent back in indiependent. as i said D-I-Y til i D-I-E!

  26. Viva La Britt says Make no mistake- this year, TV on the Radio is out to make paper. Something inside of me died when I found TVotR had ringtones available for purchase. Don't get it twisted, Brittney downloaded her "Dirty Whirlwind" tone immediately, but it was unsettling to even see that it existed. Because the band is supposed to "above" such ploys. To ABC's credit, a great song was matched with a fitting episode moment. Hell, they got brownie points with me for using the track; I'm wasn't supposed to watch the show anymore after last week's episode, but because of my new respect I relented and caught tonight's episode .
