...Kate's post the other day re: "Slim Gaillard":http://mog.com/Kate/blog_post/18542 and all of the lyrical vouty-ness entailed therein got me thinkin' of one of the original "dirty rappers", Blowfly, who, unlike Gaillard, really WOULD weave a pastiche of off-color lewdness unlike anyone I've ever heard before or since...he was so over-the-top that his lyrics went past crass and in-bad-taste and went right back around to being good...this cat had a single called "Rap Dirty" which put him on the road as a trucker ridin' through "the heartland" and his encounters with good old boys and the like...profane and insane hi-jinks inevitably ensue...when I first heard it, my friend and I copped the album tucked away in my uncle's record crate (right next the to the Redd Foxx and Richard Pryor records) and we'd sit around and snicker while our innocence got tainted by tales of ribald debauchery that Blowfly layed down over a track of hand-claps and porny bassliness-- bread is pleasant when eaten in secret, I guess...this was a decade or so before Straight Outta Compton would come out and I've never heard of Blowfly since (except for some props from Dirty Walter on the back of a Fishbone LP -- no surprise there)...anyway, I'd heard years before there was an NWA or Ice T or whomever the 'dirty-mouthed rapper du jour is...that said, I wonder what that dirty (no doubt old) bastard Blowfly's up to these days...so I did a little digging and found this album cover which is clearly inspired by the art on Bad Brains' first LP...he was the Dolomite of disco with a Shakespearean pannache for poor taste...but you can't look away once he's got you in a story...if freaky were a ship, then "Blowfly would be the fleet Admiral of all the seas great and wide":http://www.allmusic.com/cg/amg.dll?p=amg&sql=11:51uf6jah71l0~T1 , hands down, without a scintilla of doubt...this guy's built a body of work that got anthologized in the 90s son...yep...so bad, it goes past it and right back around to being good, yo...
