Soundgarden vs. Alice in Chains...

...'cause it's the middle of the day, kid...if you're feelin' a little "Minnesota" right about now...pump your fist to this:...and I'll top that off with a litte "A/C" video which holds one of the baddest vocal taglines for the last song on dark-assed LP: "Am I wrong? Have I run too far to get home?"...that's still hot, yo......two of my favorite albums to this day....

  1. Jase7734 says Soundgarden. Any day. A.i.C. to me was always a "major -label manufactured" version of a true Seattle "grunge band". But I do like some of their songs. A little bit.

  6. ejoliver77 says Aside from the slow plot and somewhat dated fashion, rent or record the movie "Singles" again to get your early-90s Seattle fix. Alice in Chains performs, and Soundgarden and Pearl Jam have small parts. A great soundtrack as well... Soundgarden any day, every day is my vote.

  7. CrashPryor says ...holy shite, it's like the Beatles and the Stones for a lot of folks I know...they're the two bands who can't occupy the same space at the same time in some people's hearts...

  8. QueenofHell says Sorry...before Col was watching a programme about politics so I didn't want to turn the sound up. I'd never knowingly heard either of them although I had heard of both of them. I prefer Alice in Chains.

  10. CrashPryor says ..I'd advise you to get Dirt first by A/C...there's not a bad cut on the whole plate...BadMotorfinger has some passable cuts but the rockin' jams make you forget about 'em...as Rock 'n Roll Pimp might say: (You cain't fuck with the Rooster"...or is it David Sedaris' little brother who'd say it...(I think they're the same guy )

  11. lemontwist says Oh geez... no, I'm going to have to pick Facelift, Alice In Chains' best album. Badmotorfinger wins over Dirt. But I think I love Alice In Chains the band more than Soundgarden the band. Tough call, though.

  12. CrashPryor says ...I didn't like the sparseness of Facelift...I liked Dirt b/c they really got to stack on Layne Staley's screech...YEE- HEAAAAHHH!!!! but hey, Facelift wasn't no slouch or nothin' either...though, "motorfinger" would nail it's ass to the floorboards...

  13. lemontwist says Dirt is definitely an awesome album. I just love the rawness of Facelift so much more. Jar Of Flies is also high up there on my list. Badmotorfinger is one of the best records ever, it's so badass it puts many, many, many other albums to shame.

  20. Takeshi Kovacs says Soundgarden - Superunknown - much better than Badmotorfinger Alice in Chains - Jar of flies - can't stand the stupid "Rooster" song.
    Permalink posted 10/13/2006
  21. holyfool says _Dirt_ is one of my favorite albums from that time, and it's one of the most emotionally draining albums ever recorded. Only the Manic Street Preachers' _The Holy Bible_ even comes close to touching it as far as someone's naked pain on a disc.

  22. joshuaseth says Both these bands are the truth. I wouldn't pick one over the other... but as for albums, I'm taking Badmotorfinger and throwing that on the deck first.

  24. eshep says soundgarden is/was the better band by a longshot. i probably will get flamed for this, but alice in chains always seemed kind of bogus to me. they seemed to kind of jump on the grunge bandwagon long after it left the station. i saw soundgarden on the ultramega ok tour and it was this pure visceral experience, unlike anything i'd heard in a long time. they sure cleaned up nice for the majors over the years, but they still remained one of the better hard rock bands out there, period. i never could really take alice in chains very seriously. not that soundgarden didn't become a parody after a while. it was good while it lasted. i think they kinda peaked on badmotorfinger.

  25. rock or death says wow - too tough to choose. These are both incredible albums and the songs you chose are each my favorite songs from these bands. (start shameless plug) I will be singing both of these songs live tonight with chaingarden at KT's Bar in SF. We will also play Rooster, Them Bones, Man In The Box by AIC and Spoonman by Soundgarden. We do lots of Pearl Jam, STP, Rage and other heavy rock. If you are in SF tonight - come and rock out!

  26. eshep says spoonman. my friends and i used to joke about how lame that was to write a song about a dude who plays the spoons. we used to make up parodies to the tune of the song, stuff like... 'streeet mime / make it look like you're climbin' rope' etc.

  28. kirtdemientieff says

I am a drummer, and my band covers 90's music. We cover some AIC and Soundgarden. They are the 2 best bands from the 90's with STP hugging third spot. As far as the singers go, Cornell can scream it out, and Staley could control, and scream...although not like Cornell. AIC's songwriting was more easily popular, and Soundgarden was more raw. The drummers were both quite good. I would say that AIC's drum lines were generally easier to follow than Soundgarden's. The most kickass tune from either was Outshined. A Black Sabbath heaviness for the new era. Who was better? Pick 10 songs from each band, and compare. at this point you will probably see that it is a hard thing to decide. You will have 20 GREAT songs full of creative energy, awesome voices, weird drumming, and superior guitar riffs. It is after you extend the list to 20 apiece that you find that AIC has the greater depth. AIC rarely had any songs that were crap, and Soundgarden had a lot of......well, not that great stuff. I say this as a great soundgarden fan. I love Burden in my hand, I love Jesus Christ Pose for the impossible drum line. I can just see in the review that AIC had a better feel for what was good for an album, and what had to be cut. AIC wins for their superior songwriting. Chris Cornell is a better singer than Layne by a snidge, but Layne makes up for it with his superior "feel" Jerry Cantrell always plays just enough to make the song without showcasing. You always want to hear more of what he can do, but he only gives you what you need. Both of these bands should be reguarded far above Pearl Jam, or Nirvana, or any of the knockoffs from them. AIC, and Soundgarden are right in there with Led Zeppelin as the most creative, and influential bands that have ever set foot on a stage. There had to be a winner, and it is AIC, but on any day Soundgarden could show them up. It is juust too bad that Layne had to be a damn heroin addict, and die. Fuck Fuck Fuck why!!! Chris Cornell vs. Layne Staley was destined to be our feast of metal for years to come! RIP Layne
