Mayonnaise is comprised of Howie B, who's worked with artists like "Björk":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P++++27211&a_id=R+++603509&PersonID=P%20%20%20%2027211&prodid=EA62787.2&si=rhino and Brian Eno. Crispin Hunt and Will O'Donovan have joined forces with B on this, "their eponymous debut":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P++++88230&a_id=R+++710068&search=mayonnaise&sec=all%20music&prodid=ADBM1187.2&si=rhino. After the CD starts spinning it becomes clear that this is not a triumvirate of programming luddites punching in bloops and bleeps wherever there's an audible hole. Tunes like "To My Head," " Falling Star" and "Wild Eyed" point to a mixture of textures found on U2's Pop Mart or in Ryuichi Sakamoto's "Yellow Magic Orchestra":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P+++++5886&a_id=R+++650431&PersonID=P%20%20%20%20%205886&prodid=JAPI204.2&si=rhino. circa Solid "Solid Sate Survivor":http://www.thestore24.com/Music/Album.aspx?p_id=P+++++5886&a_id=R+++650431&PersonID=P%20%20%20%20%205886&prodid=JAPI204.2&si=rhino which isn't a crime in either instance. The trio appears to be at the top of their form when they get to build out their ideas with cuts like the moogy "Because of the Weather" or the metronome swinging "Time" or even the bunny hopping "Winter Song." This is not an LP for beat-freaks and although there are catchy rhythmic moments all over the place, these guys don't stand on ceremony with syncopated overkill. Instead, Mayonnaise leans more towards the melodic side of the spectrum and they don't lay it on too thick (couldn't resist that pun). As Atlantic Records' late great mix master Tom Dowd once said: "It's not always what you hear in the mix that makes music sound great, sometimes it's what you don't."

  1. damianmannn says Now who's in the band. it says he's worked with Björk and Brian Eno, Crispin Hunt and Will O’Donovan. Then it says the THREE have joined forces...
