Mingus Dynasty

Posted over 3 years ago
I've got a grip of favorite bass players (Aston "Family Man" Barrett, Norwood Fischer, Charlie Haden, Bootsy Collins, Jaco Pastorius, Adam Clayton and Oscar Pettiford to name a few -- a cello's still a bass in my book, yo) but the biggest bad wolf in the whole pack has to be Charles Mingus...in his prime Charlie cut a whole heap of phat tracks like "Goodbye Porkpie Hat," "Haitian Fight Song," (you might've heard it on the film Jerry Maguire) "E's Flat and Ah's Flat Too" and of course "Wham Bam, Thank You Ma'am" which he cut with Rahsaan Roland Kirk (another jazz fave of mine but he sat in the reed section)...I highly recommend this cat to anyone looking for the real deal and to those who don't know his shite, start listening to LP's like Pithecanthropus Erectus, Mingus Dynasty or Oh Yeah which are all top notch recordings, cousin'...hell, before he died even Joni Mitchell had to give him his propers...

  1. Kate says Mingus and Kirk are in my top 5 jazz musicians of all time. I love the bass and I love everything Rahsaan has ever done. Those guys could play a paper towel roll and i'd listen.

  2. Manos says Better Git It In Your Soul is another great Mingus tune. And I'm no expert, but the bass playing that Ray Brown does on some of the Oscar Peterson tracks I've heard is incredible. He deserves a Nobel Prize for Swing for The Girl from Ipanema alone.

  3. CrashPryor says Manos! Yes! That Mingus LP Ah - Um (which feat. "Better Get Hit) is definitely a desert Island keeper...I'd have to say my fave off of that plate is "Goodbye Porkpie Hat"...BTW, you should check out Oscar Pettiford's stuff, for real

  4. Manos says I just did and I love it. God I hate this place. You people are costing me a fortune!
