Lupe Fiasco Making a Bone-headed Move?
-
Artist:
Apparently, Lupe Fiasco wants to release a three-disc album and then retire afterwards.
I see this a tremendously terrible idea for numerous reasons. Here are a few:
- Double-disc success rates are low. Most of them contain too many filler songs and overreach themselves. A 3-disc-er would just lower success rate even further.
- A three-disc album would likely contain more music than he has already released to-date. That is way too much sound information for his fans to wrap their tiny heads around in one serving (no offense meant, there is a reason 12 songs is the average length for an album). As a result, possibly great songs will be completely overlooked.
- Higher printing and production costs + lost revenues from not spiitting up release of material = lower profits. Or so I would assume.
- What is this going to cost buyers for three discs? $25 and up I would guess. That's expensive! Screw that, I'll go steal your music first, buddy.
It is probably just some stupid publicity stunt anyways, but anyone else have thoughts?

what a weird exit strategy. hopefully he changes his mind!
Well, the reason I'm not against this idea (besides being a Lupe fan through and through) is that Lupe's always been known to spit in the face of convention. He wants to do things his way and for the most part he doesn't care about the success in terms of numbers. With a cult following like he has, he's going to move copies but more importantly he's going to deliver a huge farewell present to the fans who have stuck by him through his career. I think a 3 disc album is just the way I'd want to go out with if I were Lupe. He's also a mixtape machine just like Lil Wayne, so I have no doubt he'd be able to put out consistently good material to last over 3 discs. I'm personally excited for such a move. But I can see from a record-selling standpoint that it might not be the best of ideas.
