So in about 10 days Vampire Weekend's self-titled, debut full-length will be dropping in stores. I bet many of you have heard of them by now. I've been listening to them for a couple months now and this band from New York boasts something that has not happened in music very often: a new sound. Now, wait a second. Let's understand something. There is a difference between new sound as in "This band has taken what The Cure or Pearl Jam or the Red Hot Chili Peppers have done and put a new twist on it" and the type of new sound I'm speaking of. I'm speaking of new sound as in when grunge was a new sound, or 80's hair metal was a new sound. Vampire Weekend is a new sound. What is the new sound called? Hell if I know. For now let's call it the word I got from the Last.fm wiki: "Afro-beat" rock.
These guys are one of the latest buzz bands, and have been in the blogosphere for some time now. The latest change is that now I see Vampire Weekend posters hanging in store windows, or cafe windows, and I see articles popping up about them in college entertainment newspapers. Well deserved attention without a doubt, and I will hate myself if I miss the small hipster-bar show they are putting on near me, because they probably will not be playing such small shows for very long. The track I've posted, "M79," is my favorite at the moment (stress on "at the moment," seeing as my "favorite" changes every other day). It makes good use of strings and harpsichord in addition their other "afro-beat" stylings.Other notable songs: "Bryn" ; "Oxford Comma" ; "Cape Cod Kwassa Kwassa" ; "A-Punk" ; "Campus" ; "Mansard Roof" ...uh, ok the whole album is notable, hah.
