Some in demand studio cats from Chicago including Richard Evans and Phil Upchurch cut a one off in '75 as the Chicago Gangsters. Not suprisingly some hip hop folks took notice: Compton's Most Wanted’s “Gangsta Shot Out” Eric B and Rakim’s “The Punisher” Geto Boys’s “Gangster of Love” King Sun’s “Big Shots” King T’s “Bass” Kool Moe Dee’s “Gangsta Boogie” LL Cool J’s “Mama Said Knock You Out” Mantronix’s “Gangster Boogie” Schoolly D’s “Gangster Boogie” Willie D’s “U Ain't No Ganksta

Man, this tune is funkier than 19 yards of chitlins with onions and sardines on the side.

Now that's FUNKY!

Wow...that's some sweet Clavinet playing on that track. A sound near and dear to my heart. Do you have a keyboard credit for this tune? I'm so curious who it is...

Man, 'trap, that is a good question. With a bit of research I found out the band was from Ohio, but recorded their album in Chicago with Chicago session cats. It was not a one off by the session cats, as I say (although they sure were the driving force behind it), because the Chicago gangsters dropped the Chicago part of their name and went on to make additional records. Anyway it looks like the keyboard player was Tennyson Stephens, who recorded a bunch of stuff with Phil Upchurch. Here's the detail of the Gangster boogie Sessions

I found this info on a site I'd never seen, but will see again, called Discogs

Cody - late response here, but thanks many times over for tracking down that info! You're right that it looks like Tennyson Stephens (how cool a name is that?!) recorded a lot of stuff with Phil Upchurch, and I'll be attempting to track down some of it. Upchurch is such a tasty guitarist. He also seems like a really cool guy - I know an organ player here in Portland who backed him up for a couple gigs, and he has some great stories about working with him. Good sense of humor and zero pretentiousness.

You're right - the discogs.com site is lookin' pretty cool and useful!

Glad to help, 'trap..when I was looking at his website he seemed like a regular guy there; stuffing his own envelopes and the like. I was only peripherally aware of him, until I was tracking down that info for you, so you helped me immensely by asking. Man, he has done some work! Thanks,'trap!

Hey, Cody - thought you might enjoy this photo I snapped of Phil Upchurch when he played at Portland's big Waterfront Blues Festival back in July of '03. It was a great set.
