WHERE E=MC HAMMER

Artist: Esther Phillips (1)
Track: Home is Where The Hatred Is
(10)

I did a lot of soul searching this week and when I soul search, Gil Scott-Heron is often my guide. Here's Esther Phillips doing Gil way after she was Little Esther. In comments check out a Jazz take on Lady Day and John Coltrane from Penny Goodwin.

I quite agree, this was the album that I discovered Esther Phillips with and always think of them at the same time frame. I was just listening to this past week also. Thanks for Penny Goodwin -a new find for me.Thanks

Lord, that Esther Phillips just plucks your heart out of your chest and does an elegant little dance all over it....

Yes, she sings his lyrics as if she's lived them, but I hope that neither he nor she actually has. The track revealed more musical beauty with each relistening, while the (1) under the play button resisted any change.

Penny Goodwin is a new find for me too. The busy rhythm properly propels her fine vocal about music as a solution, always a better idea than the needles that the first song laments.

Esther Phillips does such a good job that I had to replay and replay her rendition over and over again. Hatred is the place I want to be...

Thank you ever so much for the double introduction to such fine soul ladies as Penny Goodwin and Esther Phillips.

cp, I think you are right to think of the 2 in the same grouping. Esther wasn't covering an old tune, Gil's version might have been only a few months ahead of hers.

ivy, check out her Toussaint version below. Kudu was a division of CTI, supposedly the soul jazz imprint, although I don't see tons of difference. Esther's From A Whisper... album was produced by Alfred "Pee Wee" Ellis, who had just left James Brown.

Spike, Sadly both Gil and Esther were serious heroin users. According to the notes I read Esther got hooked when she was still "Little"..on tour.

Penny Goodwin is a mystery, the song I add below (off a compilation) was how I first heard her..It's about drugs too..a different bag,but still cautionary.

B to tha B, you are absolutely welcome, here's yet another cover of hatred Vicki Anderson (ex-James brown and wife of Bobby Byrd) with acid jazzers Bossa Nostra . More Hatred below..don't O.D.

Pixie - From a whisper.. is a great tune from NOLA genius Allen Toussaint, check Esther's version ▼▼

Bonus Beats

Penny Goodwin - Too Soon You're Old

Esther Phillips - From A Whisper To A Scream

Gil Scott-Heron Originals from Pieces Of A Man

Lady Day And John Coltrane

Home is Where The Hatred Is

and finally Gil's blistering live version Hatred from It's Your World. Caution-12 minute long live version! @320 I can't believe it was allowed, so there might be audio problems
