MOG MOG

BECAUSE THE WEB MOSTLY SUCKS

Album: Burning Dervish Volume 22
Track: Tchela Etbelegn
(27)

There's been some grumbling lately from the MOGvets, me included, but a couple of things happened yesterday that helped me remember to remember that MOG is still the schizznit.

1)I still, after a year and half, rarely go one day without hearing something I never heard before.

2)I am constantly hearing music I already know (or think I know) through new ears, from my trusted moggers. ► Check the golden-eared Spike along with other great MOGgers here, adding to what I already thought was good and making it better

3)Moggers are really generous. ►Check the burningdervish, with an outstanding mix of African and Reggae tunes

One of the tunes on his mix, posted above (the 22nd mix he's posted here), led me to pick up Ethiopiques 16,cause I'm now in love with Asnaqètch Wèrqu. She plays the krar. The krar is a five- or six-stringed bowl-shaped lyre from Eritrea and Ethiopia . The instrument is tuned to a pentatonic scale.(wiki)

Even though I know the record comes from Ethiopia, it sounds to me like one of those old 78's straight out of Appalachia. Killer stuff and the kind of stuff I only find out about right here on the M-O-G.

So yeah, you might hear me complain about this or that bug, or some spam, but I come back, every day, 'cause there's always something good.

Thanks MOG.

It's almost a fixture of our psyches that human beings look at the past, even the quite recent past, as significantly happier than the present. It's easier to judge what's gone than what's arrived in its place, because the past can never disappoint. Mind you; that doesn't mean that there aren't things that actually do get worse over time; you just have to bear the human tendency towards nostalgia in mind.

I often hear baseball fans griping about the game not being what it used to, and how the players they watched growing up would dominate the game if they appeared today. It seems impossible to refute statistically, since if both pitchers and hitters were better (which they insist), batting averages and ERA would remain roughly the same as then (which they do). But Bill James worked out an extremely convincing refutation which, even to outline, would make this into an incredibly long comment. Let it suffice to say that MOG can boast the most elevated level of discourse between its users of any site I've ever run into.

And whatever a krar is, Asnaqètch Wèrqu is a bloody wizard on it.

I'm glad to know I'm not the only one still full of MOG love these days. Seems like everyone's been in the pisser about this or that lately, but I still love it. It ain't perfect, but like Mike said above, it's home.

I agree with MOG despite all its shortcomings and glitches is still the best place I've ever been on or off line.

With MOG, I've discovered not only music and many things surrounding music. I'd to thank the people behind the scene and all those who keep MOG such a lively community.

Cody, thanks for the kind words. It's reassuring to hear from numerous folks here who have had the initiative and imagination to explore out there in the immense internet and return to report that Mog is the best, because sometimes I get irrationally insecure about that. It's like being at a party and wondering if there's another conversation in the other room that's even more riveting. Mog is well designed to create a community. More often than not, the bonds and traded quips with my Trusteds is even more compelling to me than the great music I hear or learn about from them. Mog's new manager T.J. told me at the recent SF get-together that Mog started up with fairly elaborate software compared to other comparable sites, and that explains the occasional technical problems we've all experienced.

The lovely Ethiopian song does sound Appalachian. I first heard about the Ethiopiques series this morning when I ventured into the dreaded Starbucks to get a concoction for a family member and emerged with the Starbuck compilation cd Bob Dylan: artist's choice containing a strange track from Ethiopiques Vol. 1. It's like learning a new word and then hearing everywhere.
