MOG MOG

WHERE MUSIC IS WORTH MORE THAN MONEY

(34)

By now, Fela Kuti is pretty well known, and Moggers have posted on him at length. If you like a little politics with your funk, Fela, his son, and his entire orbit (including monster drummer Tony Allen ◄)have created numerous masterpieces.

Fela and his crew are just the tip of the iceberg though, as far as Nigerian Funk goes, as Afro Strut's comp, Nigeria 70 shows.

The beautifully packaged set has 2 CD's of music and a third CD with an interesting audio documentary on Nigeria's fertile music scene, with commentary from Ginger Baker. The notes are very complete, with track by track annotations, and an essay that gives political, musical, and social background on the scene Fela helped create.

The disc has been out since 2001, but it is never to late to find the funk. Have a good weekend MOG. I believe I'm slated for a 2 week hiatus, so I'll see you soon.

Speaking of Tony Allen... he has done a number of collaborations with and has been remixed by members of the techno/house/electronica community.... I have been trying to get my hands on some of them... I'll post if I find something good.

Thanks Cody! Love it!!

Dzen: one of Tony's projects isn't a remix but a really funky album called Psycho on da Bus. Done with a French DJ mame Dr L. Saw them in LA a few years back.

Here's a post I made with one tune uploaded: http://mog.com/sonical/blog_post/142912

Here's a page with some posts on Dr L: http://mog.com/music/Doctor_L

And, of course, Tony's MOG page: http://mog.com/music/Tony_Allen

That compilation rules. So much cool fuzzed-out 60s guitars. I love the Koola Lobitos tracks. The DVD is informative too.

Nigeria is indeed fertile when it comes to funk and other seminal genre.

So, you're leaving us poor grasshopper to carry the torch while you're away. -- Take care of yourself, good sir.

Gosh, how I love listening to some funky sounds of Africa... this is without a doubt one hell of a choice, Mr.! And... wait wait wait wait WHAT? You better bring me some serious funk when you get back... and a pair of turquoise boots like those white funky ones up there, so I won't get all depressed and shit...

Hope seeing you soon!
