The Isley Brothers, label owners and businessmen, as well as a great band, realized the need to cross over, and did many cover songs from the rock world in attempt to spread their appeal. That they did them so well shows you why they've been around for 40 years.
In comments you'll see Houston's Fabulous Fantoms doing a cover of the cover in exacting fashion and then a Meters live medley that pays tribute to the Isleys more than once.
On a cold day in the East, 3 covers are a must.

Thanks DM² and T.machine..The brothers didn't all play acoustic guitar, but if that's what the kid's were diggin'...I'm not complaining either!
My Trusted MOGs
Only bummer is that I'm only hearing a sample of the song. Darn Rhapsody player. It's a good thing that I know this version. :=)

My Trusted MOGs
I've been posting fairly regularly, but traveling a lot (S.F. to New Orleans to S.F. to L.A. in a week's time), so comments haven't been as frequent as usual. I've been reading my Trusteds, though.
My Trusted MOGs
Thanks for the repost of the full song! :=)
My Trusted MOGs
It was a swingin' and fonkified time, Cody. http://mog.com/Mike_the_Knife/blog_post/141644 And welcome back to the MOGiverse.
My Trusted MOGs
Great song -- great cover. Snappy little tune for Monday morning. My students were nodding their heads.
My Trusted MOGs
Thanks EXP. Speaking of students, I'm supposed to be one..but here I am Mogging. tsk,tsk..
My Trusted MOGs
Really great covers. I like this song a lot. My wife hates it cause she thinks the message is BS. Oh well. I still think it's a pretty swell tune.
My Trusted MOGs
'Tis of it's time Sam, iddinit? The soulification of it wasn't too much of a jump..
My Trusted MOGs
Really wasn't too much of a jump. I was surprised by how well it translated. Definitely a sign of the times. I don't know how I could justify "but honey you weren't there, and she was, and I had to love the one I was with". Just don't think it would fly in this day and age.
My Trusted MOGs
It wouldn't fly at my house today, from my perspective or my wifes..Now in my mum and dad's day (when the original was cut), things were different, and I'm still finding out stories of different infidelities (explorations, free love sessions..whatever they called them then) between my parents. Funny, this was the first generation that started getting divorced every 5 minutes..Wonder why? Could it be that the Love wasn't really free?
My Trusted MOGs
Doesn't fly for me either. Your right though. I still keep hearing stories from my mom that makes me want to barf. Oh well. I don't think any of my friends had parents that didn't divorce. What's wrong with peace, love, and understanding anyway? :)
My Trusted MOGs
That's some fabulous stuff there Cody. Loved every last second of it!!
My Trusted MOGs
Glad to Hear it Mr.Free..The Isleys are, as DM sez, underrated.
My Trusted MOGs
tasty
My Trusted MOGs
Great cover. Love the Rhodes piano towards the end playing what I recall being a conga part on the Stephen Stills original (that hooked me completely)...I can still see the cover of that Stills album, with him playing an acoustic guitar in a snowy scene...with a toy giraffe or something by his feet. Weird.
My Trusted MOGs
...had to go back and find the original :-)
It wasn't congas, it was agogo bells or maybe steel pans...v.cool.
My Trusted MOGs
Well,I'll be Trane and the Mc man..thanks for passing by folks.
My Trusted MOGs
must have missed this before now cody great post really enjoyed it thanks x
My Trusted MOGs
I can't believe I didn't see this before. A brilliant post and groovy covers. -- There seems a particular affinity between country and RnB. Some day some one write something about that rapport --
The Meters live meddley just blows my mind, not to mention the sagacious Isley bros. Grand post. Cody, you're the boogie master.
Is this how you see interior decoration?
The four walls of your room like this, and the ceiling too ;)

Nice Bartleby..beautiful even, but alas, my vinyl days are gone.
