MOG MOG

MUSIC SIGNPOSTS ON THE WEB'S LONELY ROAD

Album: Golden State Funk
Track:
(57)

I know that MOG congress hasn't officially sanctioned any East Vs. West hostilities, but here's my preemptive strike behind enemy lines.

Golden State Recorders were located at 655 Harrison Street in San Francisco. The label/studio was started by Czech native Leo de Gar Kulka, who had worked at International Sound in LA, where he recorded folks like Sinatra and Little Richard. With that background, who knew Leo would be a Funk impressario?

The only artist I'd heard of before on this comp, that chronicles Leo's funk productions, were the San Francisco TKO's. Here's their rare groove classic, Herm. A slow burning funkstrumental w/a stinging sax break at about :50.

For more of Leo's funk check comments for the bluesy piano funk of Jeanette Jones, the crazy drums of the Eddie Bo-esque, Snooky & The Cosmic Flowers, and Wally Cox and the Natives tearing up a Hammond/Conga funkstramental.

It's Friday, I'm locked and loaded! Funk On, whether you be East or West!

It's more like a paintgun war, Dzen. We just get each other Dripping & Dirty. See?

Cody, estimated MC, my 7-year-old just agreed with me that the TKO's tune is great. When I asked him to describe how he likes it, he said "It makes me tired", but "nicely tired". Interesting... I would have said it makes me, ehem, stoned? Must be something in the San Francisco air.

Snooky and his Cosmic Flowers sound like George Clinton's men having their way a (certain) Sam & Dave tune. Loving it! Can't find nothing wrong with Wally's, either. Not that I expected to...

We could hide an entire battalion of covert operators in the afro of that dude from the SF TKO's.

Thanks for those West Coast vacation pix GC.

I'm likin' the Wally Cox, Cody. Sounds a lot like the camp I'm usually holed-up in! Good greazy grub in the mess-tent there, time to dig a fox-hole!

TKO works for me, too, but less so. I'd love to hear more from that compilation.
