A lot of folks bought this box set...
I remember back when it was out and I was just coming into the MOG fold..Folks couldn't stop telling me I needed to have it, so despite the fact I had about 1/2 of the songs I went ahead and took the plunge. Since the box is all about digging in the deep, deep vaults at Atlantic Records the collection is pretty extensive. After I started to establish my funk pedigree on MOG, I think it was Ivy who asked me if I thought anybody on the box was worth exploring in depth. I'm pretty sure I told him Black Heat was worth a look. If I didn't I should've.
There is a 2 CD comp out there,Declassified Grooves, that covers their 4 records for Atlantic that were produced in NYC by Joel Dorn. Unfortunately the comp or the box don't have what might be Black Heat's funkiest song, Zimba Ku, from their 4rth,final, and unaptly titled _Keep on Runnin'_..
Black Heat were not afraid to rock, Funkadelic style (check You Should've Listened in comments), there'a a touch a jazz as well, but the big selling point for me is the funky flute (yeah I said it..funky flute) provided on many of their tracks, courtesy of David "Fathead" Newman.
They are worth your funkin' time..check 'em

Zimba Ku is kick ass, I like that break at about 2 minutes where the horns come in center stage and then the keys pan left and the guitar pans right which leads into the flute, which I agree is funky.

this is the stuff. i wasnt familiar with "zimba ku". quality funk with solid afro roots. all 3 tracks are top in my book. they dont call you the king of funk for nuttin, pal. another ace post.

Okay: I've never got into funk too much before. I mean, I can listen to it and enjoy it, but never really "got" it, if ye ken. Anyway, I think that might have changed. This rocks. (Or is it better to say it funks?) Thanks. Now I have a whole new genre to --waste--spend my money on.
