Sampling in the hip hop era has made for a lot of cogent connections..say, Common using a Gil Scott-Heron track. But DJ's search for the perfect beat has led to some interesting, kooky, non-sequitorish stuff. Like, fer instance, Kraftwerk, not only being sampled by Miami Bass producers, but actually being the bedrock foundation of all the 2 Live Crew et al's music. I don't know if the guys in Kraftwerk knew their music would launch 100,000 pole dances, but they probably do get a chuckle, if not a few scheckles for the publishing. I recently came across a hip hop song that digs pretty deep in the sample department. Can you name the original artist and song? Answer In Comments
I plead massive ignorance to the ouevre that is Death Row. I know the hits and pretty much thought the beats were almost exclusively derived from 70's funk tracks. By the release of this 2005 Kurupt track I had pretty much forgotten all about Death Row. Now I may have to flip-flop, just to see what else producer Sir Jinx has in his crate. For Stalkin' he pretty much lifts, note for note, a huge chunk of a record that is not normally associated with The 'hood. Turns out the sampled track has also been used by UNKLE, Pharcyde, and Spacek, so I guess when I put it on a mix tape next to a Livsavas track, I wasn't as smart as I thought. Good stuff and definitely another reminder to me to keep my ears open.

i have never guessed it. that is an eerie fast beat, almost drum & bass. the korrupt tune must do good on the dancefloor at 3 in the morning, when dancers are already open to something different.

I agree with soulrocket, strange how current that beat sounds. Great song. (my taste tending toward the Can song rather than the Kurupt)

RIghteous!! Both tracks. Nice one.

@Lizzie- Hands and Towels, a delightful evening.
@Rocket-I was really shocked by the CAN use and dug Kurupt's flow.
@Dzendvokh - You are right on with the modernity claim. If Vitamin C came out today it'd fit right in with some of the jammier Yo La Tengo, maybe Stereolab.
@Diesel- The Germanic Death Row Flow. Uh-huh!

Stone cold. Like it.

What would DJs do if there had never been experimental Krauts? There would be nothing to sample! ;-) (just teasing)

If there hadn't been experimental Krauts, we would've had to invent them.

Achtung, baby!
