Sun Ra Explores Planet Funk

Posted over 2 years ago
In his travels throughout the galaxy Sun Ra ocaissionally landed on planets where funk was spoken. Here on earth he released some of these artifacts on his own label with hand drawn covers in limited pressings. Is Sun Ra the spiritual father and guide to George Clinton's space exploration? If you ever saw Sun Ra's stage show, (you know that George saw it, or at least felt it), you know what I'm talking about. It all sounds crazy, but the more I think about it, the idea of afronauts, and the political and social implications they pose, make a whole lot of sense. I don't have the chops to explain, besides Sonny and George have always said it best. Don't say it, don't even think it...They ain't crazy! Let the music speak! From 1973An additional track from '78 in comments

  3. fistula spume says I love Sun Ra. He's the king of the freak scene. He inspired so many people. I read an interview somewhere with the Residents and they said they used to take mushrooms and run up and down he isles of his shows. Great stuff.

  4. ivylander says Cody, the idea of an album by Sun Ra called "The Singles" is kind of hilarious - kinda like that Pat Boone heavy metal album. But these two cuts kill. I actually saw Sun Ra when I was 14 or 15 - I grew up in a university town and some kid on the concert committee must have been extemely hip, because he brought not only Sun Ra but also the Tony Williams Lifetime and Archie Shepp, all in the space of about two years. Needless to say, nobody knew what the fuck to make of Sun Ra. Not that I did either, but that deranged and yet somehow very ordered energy was really exciting.....

  7. StudioNone says Yet another fine post Cody! I just went to a record store in this guy's house and he had (among about 25,000 other things) a complete collection of still-sealed Sun Ra LPs, all original. The only one he was missing was Astro-Black. It was absolutely unbelievable. Boy would I like to snag me one of those hand-drawn numbers...

  8. contrabandwidth says If you want some Sun Ra weirdness check out 1974's "Space is The Place". Here's the plot summary from IMDB: Sun Ra--space-age prophet, Pharaonic jester, shaman-philosopher and avant-jazz keyboardist/bandleader--land his spaceship in Oakland, having been presumed lost in space for a few years. With Black Power on the rise, Ra disembarks and proclaims himself "the alter-destiny." He holds a myth-vs reality rap session with vblack inner-city youth at a rec center, threatening "to chain you up and take you with me, like they did you in Africa" if they resist his mplea to go to outer space. He duels at cards with The Overseer, a satanic overlord, with the fate of the black race at stake. Ra wins the right to a world concert, which features great performance footage of the Arkestra. Agents sent by the Overseer attempt to assassinate Ra, but he vanishes, rescues his people, and departs in his spaceship from the exploding planet Earth. I don't know why all that text is crossed out, but read between the lines. take a gander:
