WE DO THE MASHED POTATO AND THE FUNKY CHICKEN

Summer In Brooklyn?

Posted over 2 years ago
I think we've turned the corner. Today was the first official day of shorts wearing in Brooklyn. There were outfreakages of 80 degree weather last month, but today felt like the real thing. I started thinking about music that fits the summer groove and War came to mind.War was a Big/Black/Latino Band, that was comfortable in a funk bag, a jazz bag, a rock bag, or any other bag you might name. The "wiki":http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_%28band%29 entry does a pretty good job of breaking the history down, but it lacks a little bit when it comes to War's 1971 Self titled LP. It was cut in between their backing stint w/Eric Burdon and the massive All Day Music. War/War is a dyno-mite, politically conscious, laid back Cali-Funk gem.If you have their 2 disc anthology the version of Sun Oh Son is the shorter single cut, that lacks the sublime flute fueled intro, so I've posted the LP version here. Enjoy, the sounds of summer, and feel free to share your favorite summer coolers, musical or beveragical.

  4. Lester Jonze says I used to live in Jersey, my wife worked in the city. In the summertime on days off, I would ride the train in with her and just wander around the city all day. New York in the summertime is a beautiful thing.

  5. Cody B says Yes indeed Lester, and since many, many head out of town the crowding lessens a bit. Who needs a house in the Hamptons?

  10. soulrocket says That was a cool track, I never paid much attention to War in the past, I reckon I need to check their albums. The weather is getting hot around here too, almost time to go to the beach.

  11. Cody B says Rocket-That's as super, summer, swinger! You might like the pre-War, War stuff rocket. Basically the same guys released a pile of 45's as Senor Soul in the 60's. There's a comp on Ace. But you probably knew that already. Knife-That's the ticket..Any Summer Songs are your list? I noticed you have a drink already. Flower-Thanks. What's your cool drink of chioce?

  13. Hattie says My mom bought their two-disc anthology back in the late '90s. By the end of that summer, my sisters and I knew all the songs on those discs. When I was in grad school I made what I called walking CDs so I could jam on my way to campus. I would do a new CD like every two to three weeks, and for a long while "All Day Music" made it onto every Walking CD. Peace.

  17. Hattie says I was wondering what I'd written to spark the Cruise Director line. I was gonna roll with it, though; Carnival agreed to let me interview with them (pretty sure it was my proposed strip shuffleboard idea).

  19. TBoom says I usually know summer is here when I switch from scotch to bourbon. Nothing beats a mint julep in the summer. The song is great and I agree about the summer in the city. All the people who belong in the Hamptons all year actually go there during the summer. The weekend vibe in the city during the summer is incredible.

  20. Oatmeal says Great song Cody. Getting some big sun here in Cinci. This is the best time of year, late spring/early summer.

  21. Mike the Knife says Rollin' late here, Cody, but summer songs? I'd be a liar if I didn't admit to my affection for Brian Wilson's near-perfect "All Summer Long," with the prescient/self-referential lyrics "Every now and then, we'd hear our song / We've been having fun all summer long." How many couples who experienced a summer romance way back in the '60s actually considered "All Summer Long" their song? Countless...
